Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (R.A.B.I) is a national farming charity helping farming people in financial difficulty and helping to change lives for the better.

We offer financial support to farming people in hardship of all ages. We treat every application for support on its own merits, working with compassion and discretion.

What We Do

Need Help:

We understand that anyone can get into financial difficulty through no fault of their own. Extreme weather, illness, accidents, animal disease, family breakdown, bereavement and cash flow problems are just some of the reasons why people approach us for help.

As a welfare charity focused on supporting families, it’s people we care about. We strive to help farmers and farm-workers of all ages, including those still working as well as others who have retired through age, illness or disability. We'll also support dependents.

People with limited savings, who are on a low income, usually qualify for help, but even if we cannot give a grant we may be able to assist in other ways. For example, with food vouchers or advice about claiming state benefits.

How to apply for help

Call our Freephone Helpline: 0808 281 9490. You'll speak to a member of our dedicated welfare team and confidentiality is assured - we won't disclose any information to third parties without your explicit permission.

Once you've made contact, it's likely that we'll arrange for one of our regional welfare officers to visit you. They understand farming, its complexities and its challenges. They'll sit down with you to discuss what you need and prepare a way forward.

You can also contact us on someone’s behalf - tell us if you wish to remain anonymous. We'll send a letter to that person to offer them help.

Our grants committee meets every 6 - 8 weeks to look at applications for help but, in emergencies, the process can be fast-tracked and payments made more quickly.

Volunteer

R.A.B.I needs people like you!

We need help raising awareness of our work and encouraging farming people to contact us if they are in financial hardship. And we need fundraisers too.

Farmers, in our experience, do not want or readily seek charity. However, our message is ‘there is no shame in turning to R.A.B.I to help you through the bad times’.

There are many ways to show your support and get involved. You can donate to our cause, join one of our fundraising committees or arrange a fundraising event independently. Alternatively, you might get people at work or college, or in your local community or church to help you.

For more ideas call us for a fundraising pack on 01865 811598 or email [email protected]. We're happy to discuss ideas and let you know how we can help bring them to life.
