Colchester Foodbank

"Colchester Foodbank provides people in crisis, three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency support."

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

Colchester Foodbank provides short-term three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and toiletries to support people in crisis within Colchester and the surrounding area, especially Wivenhoe and Brightlingsea. To qualify for help, families and individuals must be referred by a frontline professional from one of over 190 local partner organisations, like Schools, Housing Associations, Hospital Discharge Team, leaving and after Care Team, Women's Refuge, Open Road, Night Shelter, Police, Probation, Community Mental Health Team, Citizens Advice Bureau and Age UK. Referrals are usually caused by a complex combination of events that may include factors like benefits delays, unemployment, illness and domestic violence. Wherever possible we refer or signpost people to other relevant agencies, so they can get the additional help, to prevent dependence on the Foodbank.

We aim to close, but we are committed to tackling food poverty and meeting the rising trend in demand for our service. We work on providing Social Policy evidence gathering data. We work with other organisations operating as a community hub to help vulnerable clients struggling with poverty to maintain housing, jobs, children, wellbeing and their dignity. To better meet clients need we are looking to buy a bigger building that is fit for purpose.

Vision: What we want to see happen in the longer term

To end hunger and poverty in the UK. (and therefore to close the charity)

Aims: What we intend to do to help make this happen

The prevention or relief of poverty in Colchester and the surrounding area, in particular, but not exclusively, by providing emergency food supplies to individuals in need and/or charities or other organisations working to prevent or relieve poverty.

Mission: What we do

The Foodbank exists to prevent or relieve poverty in Colchester and the surrounding area, in particular, but not exclusively, by providing emergency food supplies to individuals with assessed short-term need and/or to charities or other organisations working towards the same aims.

Public benefit/common good: How we help

Colchester Foodbank provides short-term emergency support to individuals and families in a crisis within Colchester and the surrounding area, including Brightlingsea. We also work with other local food banks and regularly review our areas of coverage in response to need. To qualify for help, families and individuals must be referred by a professional from a partner organisation, such as Social Services, One Support, Community Mental Health Team, local housing groups, Citizens Advice Bureau and Age UK. We also work with Churches, Schools, GP Surgeries, philanthropic individuals and businesses. The need for referral to Colchester Foodbank is usually caused by a complex combination of events that may include factors like benefits delays, unemployment, illness and domestic violence. Where possible we refer or signpost people to relevant agencies, so they can get the additional help they need. This enables them to more fully understand the reality of their issues and how to get through them, seeking appropriate support and targeted transitional intervention. Also for us, to be able to monitor our longer term social impact.
