Access Sport - Bristol

"To transform the lives of disabled and disadvantaged young people through sport & physical activ"

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

WE WANT TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD SO THAT EVERYONE, REGARDLESS OF ABILITY OR BACKGROUND, CAN TAKE PART IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.

  • We train, equip and support local volunteers and their community organisations so they can grow, become sustainable and include and develop excluded local people.
  • We unleash the untapped potential of community organisations to transform more lives and communities through sport and physical activity.
  • We turn our learnings into toolkits and models that can be replicated across different sports and different geographies, and we advocate for their adoption across the sector.

In Bristol we have two main programmes:

1. Disability Inclusion Programme - The mission of our Disability Inclusion Programme is to make disability inclusion in sport and phyiscal activity the norm, not the exception. We are equipping community organisations to open their doors to disabled young people and their families in a sustainable way that will leave behind opportunities for years to come. Taking a multi-sport approach, over three years we're working with 20 clubs to ensure there's a range of opportunities to suit all interests and abilities, creating genuine local choice.

2. Making Trax Programme - The mission of our Making Trax Programme is to normalise youth, inclusion and diversity in cycling; to support people from typically underrepresented groups to kick-start a lifelong love of cycling that leads to cycling for sport, recreation and travel.

The programme encompasses three key components:

  • Developing 5 new community bike tracks
  • Developing 5 new community bike clubs that will be run by local volunteers and coaches, with access to bike and safety equipment
  • Develop a new community outreach programme that engages disadvantaged, disabled and inactive groups through local schools, pupil referral units and SEN schools in the 5 key areas of the city

What We Do

Access Sport is all about supporting and providing opportunities for young people aged 5-25 who are disabled, disadvantaged or excluded from society.

By working with existing volunteer-led sports clubs and building new clubs,  this creates vibrant community hubs that positively engage not only young people, but all generations - be it as participants, club leaders, coaches, or volunteers.

We help the clubs to be self-sustaining, to grow, and to ensure they meet the varied needs of young people in their area.
