Home-Start Oxford

"Promoting the welfare of families with at least one child under five years of age."

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

Home-Start Oxford is a voluntary organisation providing free, confidential support for families with at least one child under the age of 5 in Oxford, and the centre and west of the county.

We help ordinary people who are going through extraordinary times.

Being a parent has never been easy. Regardless of social standing, gender or culture, it can be lonely, frustrating, heart-breaking and over-whelming. Everyone needs help sometimes, and with our team of experienced volunteers and staff we provide non-judgmental, compassionate support for parents when they need us most.

There is no such thing as a typical ‘Home-Start family’ and the support we offer is as individual as the families themselves.

What We Do

Anyone can face tough times and that’s why Home-Start Oxford is ready to support families like yours.

Home-Start Oxford support is:

  • completely free – you do not have to pay for anything.
  • entirely voluntary – you ask us for help.
  • on your terms – you decide what kind of support suits you best.
  • non-judgmental – we’re here to listen.
  • focussed on giving you skills and confidence to be the parent you want to be, and to make family life better.
  • compassionate, confidential and individual.

You don’t need to feel alone. You can do this, and we’re here by your side.

We can offer support via:

We also offer a range of specific support groups and a programme of general ‘stay & play’ sessions. All of our groups are currently being held online with a view to being face-to-face again as soon as the situation allows.
Our groups are a great place to pick up advice and tips and you will often find lots of other families facing the same issues as you.
It is possible to receive one-to-one support and attend a group, start with a group and transition to one-to-one support, or to use a group as a transition period as one-to-one support reaches a conclusion. Equally you might find that attending a group is sufficient support for your needs.
In our groups we foster a culture of inclusivity, compassion and non-judgement and would be very pleased to welcome you.

One-to-one Support

Our one-to-one support is usually offered in your own home.

Our support volunteers:

  • are trained, experienced and carefully matched with your family.
  • have parenting experience themselves and understand lots of the difficulties families can face.
  • will provide you with 2-3 hours of support per week.
  • will work alongside you to help you overcome challenges you are facing.
  • will work with you to build on your strengths and give you support that you tell us that you need.

In the same way that there is no typical ‘Home-Start family’, there is no typical ‘Home-Start volunteer’ either. Our families are individual and diverse and having a diverse range of volunteers helps us to pair the two effectively.

  • We welcome volunteers of all ages and from all sections of the community.
  • No special qualifications are necessary, but volunteers are usually parents or grandparents with a love of people, and an interest in, and experience of, young children and family life.
  • We ask that you commit to a free preparation course, part time, usually over 8 weeks.
  • We will offer you regular training and development workshops.
  • You will have back up, and ongoing support in the form of regular one-to-one catch ups with your volunteer coordinator.
  • We will ask you to provide references and information about yourself, undergo a DBS check and commit to confidentiality. This is all part of our commitment to practising ‘safer recruitment’ and ensuring that all of our volunteers are suitable to work with families.

There are 168 hours in the week. Could you spare 2-3?
