Camphill Scotland

"Providing sector leading care services for people with learning disabilities and other support needs"

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

Camphill Scotland is the membership body for the 11 Camphill communities in Scotland. Together, our members support over 610 individuals with learning disabilities and other support needs, ranging from children to older people.

The communities are located in a variety of beautiful settings across Scotland, from Dumfries to Aberdeen. Each offers a supportive community life with personalised opportunities to find purpose and belonging through a wide range of social, cultural and work activities.

Quotes from residents and the Care Inspector:

  • This is my home and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.
  • I am very happy, I know I am safe and can speak to … lots of different staff if I am worried or scared. The co-workers are very good at looking after and supporting me.
  • There are celebrations, of birthdays and festivals. Art and music form a big part of daily life. Residents’ artwork decorates the walls and is encouraged. Participation in social and cultural life is seen as important. But people are encouraged to follow their own interests too, with time for peace and space.
  • (Name) has been skilfully mentored and his abilities and needs have been met and developed … through the responsibility and fulfilment of a working day specifically designed for him.
  • We observed great conversations between residents and staff where the uniqueness of each person was acknowledged. There was excellent evidence of people being encouraged and enabled to make informed choices.

What We Do

Camphill is now an 80 year old, worldwide social movement, made up of over 100 Camphill charities across the world.  The movement was started in Scotland by Austrian refugees fleeing the Nazis.  We are an outward-looking social movement with values that resonate with current social concerns including the value of community, disability rights, ecological sustainability, inclusion and an international outlook.

There are 11 Camphill communities in Scotland who provide a range of services for children, young people, adults and the elderly including:

  • Residential care for people with learning disabilities and other support needs
  • Day services for people with learning disabilities and other support needs
  • Care home for the elderly
  • Volunteer opportunities (for locals or full time, live in volunteering for 6 months to a year)
  • Careers and vocational work in education and social care

Camphill Scotland is the membership body for the Camphill communities in Scotland.  We support the development of the Camphill charities in Scotland, making a difference for people with learning disabilities and other support needs.
