SNAPS Yorkshire (Special Needs and Parent Support)
"Making the impossible, possible for children with additional needs and supporting their families."
SNAPS is a Leeds charity that delivers high quality physiotherapy, swimming lessons, hall activities and a football club to children with additional needs. Our aim is to make the 'impossible', possible for children with additional needs.
The physiotherapy we deliver enables children with additional needs to achieve milestones such as sitting unaided, crawling and walking, goals their families are often told are not attainable.
We also provide a supportive and inclusive space to children with additional needs and their families with the aim of reducing isolation and improving mental wellbeing.
Alongside our physiotherapy and support services, we deliver an inclusive Football Club for children with additional needs and their siblings. This gives children with additional needs the opportunity to access an activity they previously couldn’t due to the unsuitability of mainstream settings.
Read about some of the families we have supported here.Hydrotherapy sessions allow the children to engage in a one to one session with a qualified physiotherapist in the Hydrotherapy pool supported by volunteer student physiotherapists from Leeds Beckett University. The sessions are tailored to the individual needs of each child. A programme of support is devised for each child and is based upon the information given by their parent/carer at their initial session and also on the evaluation carried out by the physio. The programme of support is available and updated at each session to ensure a high level of care. Each exercise/session is designed to develop the child's mobility and strength over a suitable period. Hydrotherapy is only available at the Penny Field site.
The swim session allows the children to engage in a one to one swim with a qualified instructor in the Hydrotherapy pool. The sessions are designed to help children's mobility and strength and develop sensory stimulation. The swimming also helps the children gain confidence and enables some children to move into mainstream swimming provision in the community. Swimming is only available at the Penny Field site.
Rebound Therapy is used to facilitate movement, promote balance, promote an increase or decrease in muscle tone, promote relaxation, promote sensory integration, improve fitness and exercise tolerance, and to improve communication skills.
All SNAPS sessions are an opportunity for parents and carers to get together and talk to other parents who may have similar experiences. It gives our families an opportunity to share information and provide mutual support for each other. The main hall is open for 9.30am-1.30pm every Saturday for informal play and socialising. We also deliver a changing calendar of activity that includes Boccia, story telling, Music Therapy and Dance.
SNAPS offers inclusive football sessions every Sunday in term time at the Hunslet Club in South Leeds. This is a chance for children with additional needs and their siblings to join a football team where the emphasis in on FUN! Children from 4-16 of all abilities are welcome. (Unfortunately we are unable to accept wheelchair users due to the nature of the surface.)
Regular therapeutic support can be expensive and difficult to access. SNAPS currently supports over 80 families with a child with additional needs. Our sessions make a real difference to families, but our professionally-delivered services need continuing funds to operate.
The cost of one of our physiotherapy sessions is £40, but we ask families to contribute just £9. We receive no statutory funding to do what we do – instead, we rely on the goodwill of people like you who fundraise and donate to our much-needed service.
