Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

What We Do

The Listening Ear has been supporting children and young people throughout the BCP area since 2002; working within schools and youth centres in partnership with BCP council since 2012. Based on our experience working with childen and young people, as well BACP research, we know our clients have benefited in the following ways:        

• Counselling can stop mental health problems from developing further – this early intervention treatment can stop conditions accelerating into something more serious and complex, and offer children the tools to recognise when they are experiencing difficulties with their mental wellbeing.
  

• Counselling in schools is easy for children to access – The Listening Ear usually see children and young people within 2 weeks
  

• Children and young people are more likely to see a school-based counsellor compared to non-school-based services; it cuts down their fears of stigma.
  

• Counselling that is school-based helps with behaviour and learning.
  

We work as a parallel support alongside CAMHS and thereby reducing referrals to these specialist and costly services.

The counselling provided by The Listening Ear is cost effective. Typically, one session of CAMHS costs the same as five sessions of school counselling.

Volunteer

Funding our service is always our greatest need. The more funds we have, the more childrern with mental health and wellbeing needs we are able to support within our community.
