Britannia Sailing Trust

"Rebuild and conserve the sailing ship Britannia, tackling ocean pollution and preserving traditions."

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

Britannia Sailing Trust cares for the last remaining Class 1 East Coast Smack.

Having discovered her in a state of severe disrepair, the Britannia Sailing Trust was formed and has succeeded in saving her from destruction. With a rigorously applied maintenance programme, we will ensure she never falls into that state again. Our mission is to:

  • Restore Britannia to full MCA Certification as a seagoing vessel
  •  Use her to public benefit through inspiration and engagement in maritime history, heritage, arts and crafts.
  • Offer sail training focusing on traditional seamanship and navigation.
  • Campaign for cleaner seas.

What We Do

Britannia Sailing Trust has a strong focus on community, heritage and well-being. We want to inspire people, connect them with maritime heritage, teach traditional skills and help people to make positive changes in their own lives.

At the moment we are doing this through our volunteering and outreach scheme. You can come and meet Britannia - be it for a tour, a 'taster' day or by becoming a volunteer. We can also come to you, bringing our knowledge, stories and an interesting collection of tools and objects to facilitate different kinds of presentations, workshops, activity days or school visits. Get in touch with us to talk about what Britannia can do for you!

Volunteer

Britannia's voyages will eventually be  available to everyone, particularly people facing disadvantage or hardship of any kind.

In the meantime, while she is still undergoing restoration, we are actively seeking more volunteers. Whether you are an old hand or haven't the slightest clue, you will be welcomed with open arms. We are happy to teach you everything you need to know, ranging from traditional boat-building techniques to use of modern power tools, and we can put any existing skills and expertise you may bring along to good use.

You will undertake whatever activities you feel comfortable with - whether this means a little bit of gentle sanding and varnishing interspersed with cups of tea and a natter, or more physical work such as steaming and fitting planks, caulking the deck, and so on. Whatever floats your boat! Our volunteers are really of every age and background, from young people to the very elderly, so come along, meet the team and give it a go. Even if you just want to pop your head in and take a look around the ship, you will be most welcome.

We are also looking to connect with other charities, schools, businesses and organisations in the south west, to make strategic partnerships and mutually beneficial relations. Please feel free to contact us if you have any ideas about how we could work together!
