Wildspace Garden
"To create a haven for wildlife in a previously neglected area, and allow public access and education"
Up until autumn 2020, there was a rather bedraggled and unloved piece of land behind Buckfastleigh Town Hall, with remnants of building materials and other debris strewn around the long grass. In October, the Town Council hired local artist/garden designer Charlie Narewski Scullion to create a haven for wildlife in that space.
He worked tirelessly, at first alone and later with volunteers from the Veterans Farm-Able Foundation. They cleared debris, created 3 ponds and a bog area, constructed a huge variety of insect shelters and planted all kinds of wildflowers. Gradually, birds, insects, amphibians and reptiles have arrived and already the garden is buzzing with life.
It is now open to the public. The entrance is down the side of the Town Hall, through the gate by the library.
Because the garden is a wildlife habitat for quiet enjoyment, no dogs, smoking, alcohol, or social gatherings are permitted. Members of the public are invited to come and sit a while, and see the amazing variety of wild creatures that have made the garden their home. Imagine what could be achieved if everyone with a garden found a corner to do the same transformation.
The garden provides a quiet and peaceful space to sit and relax and enjoy the nature all around.
