Transport for Sick Children
"Our volunteer drivers use their own cars to take accompanied children to hospital appointments"
We help children and their carers when they don't have a car and other transport options are unavailable. We can help with early morning, evening and weekend appointments and with prior notice we can accommodate other family members and siblings.
Without the support of the volunteer drivers to take them to appointments some children could miss our on vital hospital and clinic appointments.
If someone had a child and they were struggling to get to a health appointment we would help them by asking them to speak to a Health professional to get referred in to us. They would need to meet the following criteria :
- the child lives in the Greater Manchester area and is under 16.
- the child needs help to reach a health/medical appointment.
- the family is not eligible for other transport eg ambulance, Patient Transport.
- the family are on a low fixed income or benefit dependent.
- the child's family cannot use public transport.
We would then look for a volunteer driver to take the family to the appointment. The service is free though we do accept donations.
We are always looking for new volunteer drivers so we can help more families in need. Volunteer drivers use their own cars to pick up the child and carer, take them to the appointment then wait until the appointment has finished and take them home. Child car seats are provided and monthly mileage expenses are paid. The role is flexible with some drivers on the road most days and others a few times a month.
