SUMMARY:Big Schools' Birdwatch
DESCRIPTION:Big Schools’ Birdwatch\nThe RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch is a citizen science project for schools across the UK. It takes place alongside\, the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch. \nIt’s easy (and free!) to get involved\, and we find that most children are excited to be a part of this important research. All you have to do is count the bird species you can see in your school\, and then send the results to the RSPB. Easy! \nSubmission for results is open between 6th January – 13th February. \nRSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch has been running for over 20 years\, and the reason it’s been going for so long is that it’s such valuable work. The results that schools submit to the RSPB are used by scientists to help create a picture of how birds are faring across the UK. \nTo register for RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch\, you can follow this link\, which takes you to their website. \n  \nSource: Big Schools’ Birdwatch (rspb.org.uk)

SUMMARY:Cervical Cancer Prevention Week
DESCRIPTION:This week is Cervical Cancer Prevention Week. \nStatistics show that 1 in 3 people don’t go to their cervical screening appointment due to embarrassment or fear. There’s a lot of built-up stigma around the test\, but it’s one that’s vitally important. \nAccording to the NHS\, the early signs of ovarian cancer can be: \n\na swollen tummy or feeling bloated\npain or tenderness in your tummy or the area between the hips (pelvis)\nno appetite or feeling full quickly after eating\nan urgent need to pee or needing to pee more often\n\nCervical cancer is curable with early detection. It is also very slow to spread\, increasing the chances of cure. All we have to do is test and start treatment before cancer grows. \nTherefore it is crucial that women aged 25 – 64 take up their free cervical screening on the NHS as soon as they receive their invitation. \n  \nFind out more at: Cervical Cancer Prevention Week | Awareness Days \n

SUMMARY:National Hug Day
DESCRIPTION:Open up your heart … and your arms\, this January 21st for National Hug Day! As you might guess\, this day is an annual event dedicated to the underrated art form of the hug. We love all types of hugs\, from the one-armed bro hug to full bear hugs. So let’s get hugging! \nThe simplest and most effective way of expressing affection is celebrated on National Hug Day. Even though a #Hug is one of the most natural gestures\, it’s not practiced enough these days! This holiday encourages hugging\, as a therapeutic way to convey affection and emotions. \nThe word “hug” is believed to come from the word “hugga” meaning “to comfort” in the Old Norse language\, first appearing approximately 450 years ago. However\, the history of hugging itself is a bit more uncertain. What is known is that it is only very recently (within the past 50 years) that we have seen a full acceptance of hugging in public\, separating it from other distinguished displays of affection such as kissing. The widespread adoption of hugging over the recent years has been debated to be due to two primary reasons: the reduced formality of dress code and manners between relationships\, along with the changing behaviours of political figures in pursuit of a more relatable\, warm-hearted perception to the public. \nNowadays\, we don’t even think about the fact that #Hugging in public was considered indecent PDA. We hug to greet friends and family\, to say goodbye\, or to congratulate someone. To console someone or to show support. We hug before sports and performance teams begin their match\, and to show a general sign of affection between intimate relationships. There are also Free Hugs charity fundraisers! \nThe best way National Hug Day is celebrated is by spreading the love and offering a hug to your friends and family. It’s amazing how much difference a simple hug can make. Spend your day letting your nearest and dearest know that you’re there for them by giving them hugs and lifting their spirits. \n  \n#FreeHugs #NationalHugDay2026 #SpreadTheLove \nSource:  NATIONAL HUGGING DAY – January 21\, 2026 – National Today
