SUMMARY:International Men's Day
DESCRIPTION:On November 19\, International Men’s Day celebrates worldwide the positive value men bring to the world\, their families and communities. We highlight positive role models and raise awareness of men’s well-being. The theme for 2025 is “Celebrating Men and Boys”.\nInternational Men’s Day encourages men to teach the boys in their lives the values\, character and responsibilities of being a man. Mahatma Gandhi said\, “We must become the change we seek.” It is only when we all\, both men and women\, lead by example that we will create a fair and safe society that allows everyone the opportunity to prosper. \nInternational Men’s Day is an opportunity for people everywhere of goodwill to appreciate and celebrate the men in their lives and the contribution they make to society for the greater good of all. \n#InternationalMensDay #LeadingByExample #ZeroMaleSuicide \n  \nFind Out More: https://internationalmensday.com/

SUMMARY:Carers Rights Day
DESCRIPTION:This year\, Carers Rights Day is on Thursday 20 November and the theme is ‘Know your rights\, use your rights.’ \nEvery day\, 12\,000 people become unpaid carers for a partner\, family member or a friend – many of whom don’t see themselves as carers\, often unaware of their legal rights and what they’re entitled to in terms of support and benefits. \nCarers should not have to miss out on support designed to reduce some of the pressures caring can bring. Whether they care 24/7 or juggle care with work and family life\, are new to caring or have been for many years\, and wherever they live in the UK – all carers deserve to understand their rights and be supported to use them if they wish. \nGet involved in Carers Rights Day and help carers in your network and local community know about their rights and the wider support available. \nAs a carer\, knowing your rights empowers you with information about what you’re entitled to. This helps you feel confident asking for what you need\, as well as challenging things when your rights are not being met – whether that be in the workplace or education\, in accessing health or social care\, or when interacting with other professionals or at home. \n#CarersRights #RecogniseYourRights #CarersSupport \n*Source: Carers Rights Day | Carers UK \n  \n\nAs always\, please check on aDoddle as help and support\, opportunities to volunteer or connect with others can often be found through local community organisations. \nPS – If you are a local community organisation and haven’t already added your details to aDoddle – please do\, it is totally free.

SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honour the memory of Rita Hester\, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death\, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. \n“Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights\, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people — sometimes in the most brutal ways possible — it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered\, and that we continue to fight for justice.”- Transgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith \nSource: Glaad \n  \nFind Out More: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transgender_Day_of_Remembrance

SUMMARY:White Ribbon Day
DESCRIPTION:White Ribbon Day sees the start of 16 Days of Action against domestic and sexual violence. \nWhite Ribbon is a campaign led by men\, aimed at putting an end to male violence against women. Men across the globe raise awareness and show their support for the campaign by wearing a white ribbon. \n1 in 4 women will be a victim to sexual assault or attempted assault in their lifetimes. (National Audit Office\, 2025) \nCulture change doesn’t happen overnight\, but we can end men’s violence against women and girls in our lifetimes. \nThis years theme is #WeSpeakUp. Letting sexism slide puts women and girls at risk. Sexist jokes\, catcalling\, staring\, and comments might seem harmless\, but they are serious because they can lead to violence and abuse.\nThis White Ribbon Day\, we want more men to use their voices and speak up to create a world where everyone is safe\, equal and respected. \nEvery time we ignore something that doesn’t feel right\, we miss a chance to set a better example. \nViolence experienced by women and girls takes many forms. Some behaviours and words may seem ‘harmless’ but normalising them ignores the short- and long-term effects on women and can lead to more extreme violence. \n#WhiteRibbonDay #NoExcuseForAbuse #WeSpeakUp \nFind out more about White Ribbon Day: https://www.whiteribbon.org.uk/

SUMMARY:World AIDS Day
DESCRIPTION:Today is World Aids Day\, this annual event serves as an important reminder that we must remain steadfast in our commitment to prevent new HIV infections and provide essential services to all people living with HIV globally. In the UK\, more than 105\,000 people are living with HIV. Globally\, an estimated 38 million people live with the virus. More than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS related illnesses over the past 40 years\, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history. \nIts also a good opportunity to clear up misconceptions about the disease\, which may lead to prejudice. \n\nHIV cannot be spread through touch\, tears\, sweat\, saliva\, or pee. It can only be spread through blood\, semen\, vaginal fluid or breast milk\nMosquitos cannot spread HIV among humans\nHIV can be spread among heterosexual couples\nTreatment for HIV doesn’t involve taking dozens of pills a day – most only take 1-4 a day\nPeople with HIV can still safely have children\nContracting HIV doesn’t mean your life is over – With treatment\, it’s possible to live a long and healthy life\, just like anyone else\n\n\n#RockTheRibbon #WorldAidsDay #LivingwithHIV \nSource: WebMD

SUMMARY:Homelessness Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:Homelessness Awareness Week\, held annually in December\, is a vital initiative that shines a spotlight on the issues faced by individuals experiencing homelessness. The week promotes understanding\, compassion\, and action\, encouraging communities to work together to address the root causes of homelessness and support those affected. \nOrganisations\, charities\, and local councils often host events such as fundraising drives\, volunteer initiatives\, and educational workshops to raise awareness. These efforts highlight the importance of safe and stable housing\, mental health support\, and access to essential services in breaking the cycle of homelessness. \nHomelessness Awareness Week is also an opportunity to challenge stereotypes and advocate for policy changes that address systemic issues. By amplifying the voices of those with lived experiences\, the week fosters empathy and encourages meaningful engagement to create lasting solutions. \n#HomelessnessAwarenessWeek #EndHomelessness #SupportTheHomeless #HousingForAll #CommunityCare #AffordableHousing \nSource: Homelessness Awareness Week | Awareness Days

SUMMARY:National Grief Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:National Grief Awareness Week is a time to raise awareness of the impact of #Grief and #Bereavement. \nThe bereaved often have to hide their grief from others. Sometimes it is from their friends and family as they do not want to burden them. Sometimes it is from their colleagues at work. Please look out for them\, check they are okay\, in the early days and ongoing.  They may look alright\, they may be going to work\, but deep inside they could be struggling and just need your support and understanding. \nWe are often afraid to mention the person’s name who has died. We think we will upset our friend or family member\, but it is generally the opposite. By saying their name\, remembering them and talking about them\, you are helping to share your love and affection for that person. This is very important and will help those grieving to know that you will help to keep their memory alive. \nThere is a myth that you ‘get over’ grief. That you ‘move on’. You don’t. You move forward with your grief\, but you may be affected by a bereavement throughout your whole life. Often after the funeral\, people leave and things go ‘back to normal’. This is the time when the bereaved most need support\, when they feel alone and isolated. We need to understand that there are triggers that may come from nowhere that will affect them in the weeks\, months and years after the death. \nSo lets normalise talking about grief\, to ensure grief becomes an easier topic to discuss and lets raise the profiles of #Charities and the breadth of support we have in the UK offering tailored help for any bereavement. \n\nThis year the theme is “Growing with Grief”\n\nLosing a loved one feels like an ending in so many ways\, but in time\, it can also become the ground from which something new begins. After that loss\, we can’t go back to who we were\, but instead\, we can grow into someone new shaped by love\, memories\, and resilience. This growth doesn’t erase the pain\, but it allows HOPE to return. We may even become more present\, more compassionate\, more aware of what truly matters in life. \n#BetterTogether #NGAW2025 #GrowingWithGrief \nSource: National Grief Awareness Week (thegoodgrieftrust.org) \n

SUMMARY:International Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:Today is International Volunteer Day – A day to promote volunteerism\, encourage more people to consider volunteering\, and encourage governments to support volunteering efforts. \nVolunteers are the glue that holds together many charitable organisations. Without their efforts\, many charities would struggle to make the vital impact that helps so many people to live their lives every day. \nTheme of the day 2025\nInternational Volunteer Day theme is “Solidarity through volunteering.” The theme aims to gather all people to volunteer work for social and economic development and to change people’s mindsets to build a better world. This time is not to stand alone\, but we must stand with each other to work together. We must act together for the future of our planet and start acting upon this idea right now before it becomes too late because sustainable human development and a spirit of equity underpin all interactions in this world. \nWe’d love to hear your volunteering stories\, leave a comment on our Facebook\, Twitter\, or Instagram pages to share them with us. \n  \nSource: https://www.un.org/en/observances/volunteer-day

SUMMARY:Human Rights Day
DESCRIPTION:Human Rights Day is observed by the international community every year on 10 December. It commemorates the day in 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. \nThe formal inception of Human Rights Day dates from 1950\, after the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V) inviting all States and interested organizations to adopt 10 December of each year as Human Rights Day. \nWhen the General Assembly adopted the Declaration\, it was proclaimed as a “common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations”\, towards which individuals and societies should “strive by progressive measures\, national and international\, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance”. \nThe Universal Declaration of Human Rights sets out a broad range of fundamental rights and freedoms to which all of us are entitled. It guarantees the rights of every individual everywhere\, without distinction based on nationality\, place of residence\, gender\, national or ethnic origin\, religion\, language\, or any other status. \nAlthough the Declaration is not a binding document\, it inspired more than 60 human rights instruments which together constitute an international standard of human rights. Today the general consent of all United Nations Member States on the basic Human Rights laid down in the Declaration makes it even stronger and emphasizes the relevance of Human Rights in our daily lives. \nThe High Commissioner for Human Rights\, as the main United Nations rights official\, and the Office of the High Commissioner play a major role in coordinating efforts for the yearly observation of Human Rights Day. \n  \n#HujmanRightsDay #HumanRights \nSource: OHCHR

SUMMARY:International Migrants Day
DESCRIPTION:As we observe International Migrants Day on December 18th\, we reflect upon the challenges and difficulties faced by over 272 million migrants courageously building new lives in every corner of the world. The reality of migration is more than just starting over. \nMigrants travel in search of security and opportunities that will allow them to reinvent themselves. Others are escaping from discrimination and prejudice. Host societies need to evolve and welcome these communities for a better tomorrow. \nThis past year\, we saw record levels of internal displacement\, rising humanitarian needs across ongoing and new crises\, and\, tragically\, the highest-ever death toll of migrants in transit. Yet\, alongside these challenges\, are stories of resilience\, progress and hope. Where safe and well-managed migration holds extraordinary potential. Migrants play critical roles in labour markets\, filling skills gaps\, driving innovation and entrepreneurship\, and addressing demographic challenges in aging societies. Migrants boost economic growth and provide a lifeline to families and communities back home\, driving development. \nThe evidence is overwhelming that when migration is managed safely and strategically\, it can be a powerful force for good. By supporting regular pathways for migration\, we can enable opportunities for migrants\, better protect their rights\, and contribute to greater prosperity in the countries migrants come from and those that host them. \nTogether\, one step at a time\, we can continue building a world where migration is safe\, orderly\, and beneficial – for everyone. \n#MigrantsDay #InternationalMigrantsDay #Refugees \nSource:  https://www.un.org/en/observances/migrants-day \n

SUMMARY:National Robin Day
DESCRIPTION:Did you know there is an annual awareness day for robins? National Robin Day is on the 21st December\, created by the charity Songbird Survival in 2016 as a way to raise awareness of not only robins but also all small garden birds who may struggle to survive the cold winter months. \nWinter can be a particularly difficult time for the UK’s garden birds. Many of their natural food sources such as insects and seeds are not available\, and they often rely on the food we put out for them to give them enough energy to get through winter and prepare for the breeding season ahead. \n#NationalRobinDay was set up to inspire collective action to help save our garden birds and not take for granted the wonderful wildlife that surrounds us. \n#Conservation #GardenBirds #SaveOurGardenBirds \nSource:  https://www.birdspot.co.uk/a-little-bird/events/national-robin-day-help-save-our-garden-birds

SUMMARY:Dry January
DESCRIPTION:Alcohol use has been part of different cultures and societies for thousands of years. While many people find that alcohol is an enjoyable part of their lives\, it can have a tendency to create some difficulties and even throw their health out of balance. Some of the things people want to avoid may include the calories from alcohol that can create weight gain\, as well as the cost involved with drinking alcohol. Taking the month of January to reset and rebuild new\, healthy habits is what #DryJanuary is all about. \nWhile the term first made an appearance in the early 2000s\, the official day didn’t happen until about a decade later. It all started in 2011 when Emily Robinson signed up to run a half marathon in February and realized she needed to get her body ready during the month of January. Because her training regimen included giving up alcohol\, she found that she was sleeping better\, losing weight and had more energy. \nSo the following year\, Emily joined Alcohol Change UK and decided to give up drinking for the month of January again. The following year\, Alcohol Change UK launched its official celebration of Dry January and the practice has been catching on over the years since then. In 2014\, Dry January became a registered trademark by the Alcohol Change UK charity. As it turns out\, many people have been finding that Dry January offers a variety of benefits to their lives. \nWhen a group of people who had participated in Dry January were surveyed\, it was discovered that the celebration of the day had helped them to establish healthier habits around drinking. \n Each year\, many of the people who participate in Dry January have considered it to be a positive experience\, saying that they have lost weight and are drinking less even six months later. Many of them have dropped from ‘harmful’ categories of drinking to ‘low risk’. In a few countries\, like in Czech Republic or Canada\, the non-drinking month is actually celebrated as Dry February. \nBut no matter when it is\, the concept is the same – bringing balance and health to thousands of people by helping them reset their drinking habits. * \n#AlcoholFree #Sobriety #SoberLife #RecoveryIsPossible #DryJanuary \n  \n*Source: https://alcoholchange.org.uk/get-involved/campaigns/dry-january

SUMMARY:Love Your Liver Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:January is Love Your Liver Month ! \nThe liver is an amazing multi-tasker and has over 500 vital jobs to do to keep you alive. It’s just as important as other organs like your heart and lungs\, but they tend to steal most of the limelight. \nSadly\, people with liver disease often don’t have any symptoms until the disease has progressed and it’s far too late for treatment. That’s why it’s so important to know the risk factors and to keep your liver happy and healthy for life. \n\n\n\n\nThis January\, let’s show our livers some love by doing something healthy. \n\n\n\n\n  \nSource: https://britishlivertrust.org.uk/love-your-liver-month/

SUMMARY:Festival of Sleep Day
DESCRIPTION:We’ve been enjoying forty winks ever since the human race came into existence\, but we haven’t always understood it. Early speculation by the Ancient Greeks about the reason for sleep was that it is due to lack of circulation\, causing the body to become unconscious for a period of time while it rebalanced. Theorists were divided at first on whether this was due to the brain or the heart\, which were known to be the two most important organs. \nBack then\, #Sleep was separated into a first and second sleep of the day\, instead of the single long stretch we enjoy today. In the interlude between sleep\, people would socialize and relax. This routine stayed the same for centuries but was disrupted by the Industrial Revolution and the invention of artificial light\, which allowed for a longer working day and therefore pushed together the periods of sleep. The socializing section of the day was moved to before bed instead. \nThe desire for success in the newly industrialized world would eat into the sleeping time of many workers and businesspeople\, as it continues to do today. A new regulation was introduced by Ford in 1926\, when it became the first American company to provide employees with a fixed schedule of an eight-hour working day and a 40-hour working week\, allowing those on the payroll to get to bed on time. \nFestival of Sleep Day is a modern-day celebration\, supposedly invented to help us recharge our batteries from all the lost sleep around the festive season at the end of the year. It reminds us to practice self-care for the coming year and take advantage of the numerous benefits of a good night’s sleep. \n#FestivalOfSleepDay #SelfCare \nSource: https://nationaltoday.com/festival-of-sleep-day/

SUMMARY:World Braille Day
DESCRIPTION:World Braille Day is an international day of awareness to highlight the importance of Braille as a means of communication for blind and visually impaired people. \nThe date\, 4 January\, is significant as it also marks Louis Braille’s birthday in 1809. \nLouis first presented his tactile system of reading and writing in 1824 when he was just 15 years old and spent the rest of his life perfecting it. \nBraille continues to be used globally in many different languages\, including music\, and even with the advent of accessible technology\, Braille continues to thrive\, allowing its readers to submerge themselves into language completely giving independence\, knowledge and freedom. \nRNC offers accredited BTEC qualifications in Braille to its students alongside their other studies. SUMMARY:Big Schools' Birdwatch
DESCRIPTION:Big Schools’ Birdwatch\nThe RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch is a citizen science project for schools across the UK. It takes place alongside\, the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch. \nIt’s easy (and free!) to get involved\, and we find that most children are excited to be a part of this important research. All you have to do is count the bird species you can see in your school\, and then send the results to the RSPB. Easy! \nSubmission for results is open between 6th January – 13th February. \nRSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch has been running for over 20 years\, and the reason it’s been going for so long is that it’s such valuable work. The results that schools submit to the RSPB are used by scientists to help create a picture of how birds are faring across the UK. \nTo register for RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch\, you can follow this link\, which takes you to their website. \n  \nSource: Big Schools’ Birdwatch (rspb.org.uk)

SUMMARY:Brew Monday (BlueMonday)
DESCRIPTION:The third Monday in January is sometimes referred to as ‘the most difficult day of the year’ but this is a myth. \nAt Samaritans\, they know there’s no such thing as ‘Blue Monday’ – we all have our good days and our bad days\, and those aren’t for the calendar to decide. So lets say it’s time to stop this myth about Monday being ‘blue’ and instead start a conversation over a brew! Reach out and connect with family\, friends\, colleagues and loved ones. We can always make time for a cuppa and a catch-up. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Monday morning or Saturday night\, or if you’re drinking green tea\, black coffee or orange juice. If you’re sharing a cuppa and listening\, you’re doing it right. \nSamaritans are there for you round the clock\, every single day of the year. SUMMARY:Cervical Cancer Prevention Week
DESCRIPTION:This week is Cervical Cancer Prevention Week. \nStatistics show that 1 in 3 people don’t go to their cervical screening appointment due to embarrassment or fear. There’s a lot of built-up stigma around the test\, but it’s one that’s vitally important. \nAccording to the NHS\, the early signs of ovarian cancer can be: \n\na swollen tummy or feeling bloated\npain or tenderness in your tummy or the area between the hips (pelvis)\nno appetite or feeling full quickly after eating\nan urgent need to pee or needing to pee more often\n\nCervical cancer is curable with early detection. It is also very slow to spread\, increasing the chances of cure. All we have to do is test and start treatment before cancer grows. \nTherefore it is crucial that women aged 25 – 64 take up their free cervical screening on the NHS as soon as they receive their invitation. \n  \nFind out more at: Cervical Cancer Prevention Week | Awareness Days \n

Even though a #Hug is one of the most natural gestures\, it’s not practiced enough these days! This holiday encourages hugging\, as a therapeutic way to convey affection and emotions. \nThe word “hug” is believed to come from the word “hugga” meaning “to comfort” in the Old Norse language\, first appearing approximately 450 years ago. However\, the history of hugging itself is a bit more uncertain. What is known is that it is only very recently (within the past 50 years) that we have seen a full acceptance of hugging in public\, separating it from other distinguished displays of affection such as kissing. The widespread adoption of hugging over the recent years has been debated to be due to two primary reasons: the reduced formality of dress code and manners between relationships\, along with the changing behaviours of political figures in pursuit of a more relatable\, warm-hearted perception to the public. \nNowadays\, we don’t even think about the fact that #Hugging in public was considered indecent PDA. We hug to greet friends and family\, to say goodbye\, or to congratulate someone. To console someone or to show support. We hug before sports and performance teams begin their match\, and to show a general sign of affection between intimate relationships. There are also Free Hugs charity fundraisers! \nThe best way National Hug Day is celebrated is by spreading the love and offering a hug to your friends and family. It’s amazing how much difference a simple hug can make. Spend your day letting your nearest and dearest know that you’re there for them by giving them hugs and lifting their spirits. \n  \n#FreeHugs #NationalHugDay2026 #SpreadTheLove \nSource:  NATIONAL HUGGING DAY – January 21\, 2026 – National Today
