SUMMARY:International Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:Today is International Volunteer Day – A day to promote volunteerism\, encourage more people to consider volunteering\, and encourage governments to support volunteering efforts. \nVolunteers are the glue that holds together many charitable organisations. Without their efforts\, many charities would struggle to make the vital impact that helps so many people to live their lives every day. \nTheme of the day 2025\nInternational Volunteer Day theme is “Solidarity through volunteering.” The theme aims to gather all people to volunteer work for social and economic development and to change people’s mindsets to build a better world. This time is not to stand alone\, but we must stand with each other to work together. We must act together for the future of our planet and start acting upon this idea right now before it becomes too late because sustainable human development and a spirit of equity underpin all interactions in this world. \nWe’d love to hear your volunteering stories\, leave a comment on our Facebook\, Twitter\, or Instagram pages to share them with us. \n  \nSource: https://www.un.org/en/observances/volunteer-day

SUMMARY:Human Rights Day
DESCRIPTION:Human Rights Day is observed by the international community every year on 10 December. It commemorates the day in 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. \nThe formal inception of Human Rights Day dates from 1950\, after the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V) inviting all States and interested organizations to adopt 10 December of each year as Human Rights Day. \nWhen the General Assembly adopted the Declaration\, it was proclaimed as a “common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations”\, towards which individuals and societies should “strive by progressive measures\, national and international\, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance”. \nThe Universal Declaration of Human Rights sets out a broad range of fundamental rights and freedoms to which all of us are entitled. It guarantees the rights of every individual everywhere\, without distinction based on nationality\, place of residence\, gender\, national or ethnic origin\, religion\, language\, or any other status. \nAlthough the Declaration is not a binding document\, it inspired more than 60 human rights instruments which together constitute an international standard of human rights. Today the general consent of all United Nations Member States on the basic Human Rights laid down in the Declaration makes it even stronger and emphasizes the relevance of Human Rights in our daily lives. \nThe High Commissioner for Human Rights\, as the main United Nations rights official\, and the Office of the High Commissioner play a major role in coordinating efforts for the yearly observation of Human Rights Day. \n  \n#HujmanRightsDay #HumanRights \nSource: OHCHR

The day is celebrated to pay tribute to and advocate animal rights. \nOn this day\, animal lovers can encourage their friends\, family\, relatives\, or communities to provide a voice for animal rights. They deserve our respect\, love\, and fair treatment. SUMMARY:International Migrants Day
DESCRIPTION:As we observe International Migrants Day on December 18th\, we reflect upon the challenges and difficulties faced by over 272 million migrants courageously building new lives in every corner of the world. The reality of migration is more than just starting over. \nMigrants travel in search of security and opportunities that will allow them to reinvent themselves. Others are escaping from discrimination and prejudice. Host societies need to evolve and welcome these communities for a better tomorrow. \nThis past year\, we saw record levels of internal displacement\, rising humanitarian needs across ongoing and new crises\, and\, tragically\, the highest-ever death toll of migrants in transit. Yet\, alongside these challenges\, are stories of resilience\, progress and hope. Where safe and well-managed migration holds extraordinary potential. Migrants play critical roles in labour markets\, filling skills gaps\, driving innovation and entrepreneurship\, and addressing demographic challenges in aging societies. Migrants boost economic growth and provide a lifeline to families and communities back home\, driving development. \nThe evidence is overwhelming that when migration is managed safely and strategically\, it can be a powerful force for good. By supporting regular pathways for migration\, we can enable opportunities for migrants\, better protect their rights\, and contribute to greater prosperity in the countries migrants come from and those that host them. \nTogether\, one step at a time\, we can continue building a world where migration is safe\, orderly\, and beneficial – for everyone. \n#MigrantsDay #InternationalMigrantsDay #Refugees \nSource:  https://www.un.org/en/observances/migrants-day \n

SUMMARY:National Robin Day
DESCRIPTION:Did you know there is an annual awareness day for robins? National Robin Day is on the 21st December\, created by the charity Songbird Survival in 2016 as a way to raise awareness of not only robins but also all small garden birds who may struggle to survive the cold winter months. \nWinter can be a particularly difficult time for the UK’s garden birds. Many of their natural food sources such as insects and seeds are not available\, and they often rely on the food we put out for them to give them enough energy to get through winter and prepare for the breeding season ahead. \n#NationalRobinDay was set up to inspire collective action to help save our garden birds and not take for granted the wonderful wildlife that surrounds us. \n#Conservation #GardenBirds #SaveOurGardenBirds \nSource:  https://www.birdspot.co.uk/a-little-bird/events/national-robin-day-help-save-our-garden-birds

SUMMARY:Dry January
DESCRIPTION:Alcohol use has been part of different cultures and societies for thousands of years. While many people find that alcohol is an enjoyable part of their lives\, it can have a tendency to create some difficulties and even throw their health out of balance. Some of the things people want to avoid may include the calories from alcohol that can create weight gain\, as well as the cost involved with drinking alcohol. Taking the month of January to reset and rebuild new\, healthy habits is what #DryJanuary is all about. \nWhile the term first made an appearance in the early 2000s\, the official day didn’t happen until about a decade later. It all started in 2011 when Emily Robinson signed up to run a half marathon in February and realized she needed to get her body ready during the month of January. Because her training regimen included giving up alcohol\, she found that she was sleeping better\, losing weight and had more energy. \nSo the following year\, Emily joined Alcohol Change UK and decided to give up drinking for the month of January again. The following year\, Alcohol Change UK launched its official celebration of Dry January and the practice has been catching on over the years since then. In 2014\, Dry January became a registered trademark by the Alcohol Change UK charity. As it turns out\, many people have been finding that Dry January offers a variety of benefits to their lives. \nWhen a group of people who had participated in Dry January were surveyed\, it was discovered that the celebration of the day had helped them to establish healthier habits around drinking. \n Each year\, many of the people who participate in Dry January have considered it to be a positive experience\, saying that they have lost weight and are drinking less even six months later. Many of them have dropped from ‘harmful’ categories of drinking to ‘low risk’. In a few countries\, like in Czech Republic or Canada\, the non-drinking month is actually celebrated as Dry February. \nBut no matter when it is\, the concept is the same – bringing balance and health to thousands of people by helping them reset their drinking habits. * \n#AlcoholFree #Sobriety #SoberLife #RecoveryIsPossible #DryJanuary \n  \n*Source: https://alcoholchange.org.uk/get-involved/campaigns/dry-january

SUMMARY:Love Your Liver Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:January is Love Your Liver Month ! \nThe liver is an amazing multi-tasker and has over 500 vital jobs to do to keep you alive. It’s just as important as other organs like your heart and lungs\, but they tend to steal most of the limelight. \nSadly\, people with liver disease often don’t have any symptoms until the disease has progressed and it’s far too late for treatment. That’s why it’s so important to know the risk factors and to keep your liver happy and healthy for life. \n\n\n\n\nThis January\, let’s show our livers some love by doing something healthy. \n\n\n\n\n  \nSource: https://britishlivertrust.org.uk/love-your-liver-month/

SUMMARY:Festival of Sleep Day
DESCRIPTION:We’ve been enjoying forty winks ever since the human race came into existence\, but we haven’t always understood it. Early speculation by the Ancient Greeks about the reason for sleep was that it is due to lack of circulation\, causing the body to become unconscious for a period of time while it rebalanced. Theorists were divided at first on whether this was due to the brain or the heart\, which were known to be the two most important organs. \nBack then\, #Sleep was separated into a first and second sleep of the day\, instead of the single long stretch we enjoy today. In the interlude between sleep\, people would socialize and relax. This routine stayed the same for centuries but was disrupted by the Industrial Revolution and the invention of artificial light\, which allowed for a longer working day and therefore pushed together the periods of sleep. The socializing section of the day was moved to before bed instead. \nThe desire for success in the newly industrialized world would eat into the sleeping time of many workers and businesspeople\, as it continues to do today. A new regulation was introduced by Ford in 1926\, when it became the first American company to provide employees with a fixed schedule of an eight-hour working day and a 40-hour working week\, allowing those on the payroll to get to bed on time. \nFestival of Sleep Day is a modern-day celebration\, supposedly invented to help us recharge our batteries from all the lost sleep around the festive season at the end of the year. It reminds us to practice self-care for the coming year and take advantage of the numerous benefits of a good night’s sleep. \n#FestivalOfSleepDay #SelfCare \nSource: https://nationaltoday.com/festival-of-sleep-day/

SUMMARY:World Braille Day
DESCRIPTION:World Braille Day is an international day of awareness to highlight the importance of Braille as a means of communication for blind and visually impaired people. \nThe date\, 4 January\, is significant as it also marks Louis Braille’s birthday in 1809. \nLouis first presented his tactile system of reading and writing in 1824 when he was just 15 years old and spent the rest of his life perfecting it. \nBraille continues to be used globally in many different languages\, including music\, and even with the advent of accessible technology\, Braille continues to thrive\, allowing its readers to submerge themselves into language completely giving independence\, knowledge and freedom. \nRNC offers accredited BTEC qualifications in Braille to its students alongside their other studies. More details can be found here. \nHappy World Braille Day! \n  \nSource: News (rnc.ac.uk)

SUMMARY:Big Schools' Birdwatch
DESCRIPTION:Big Schools’ Birdwatch\nThe RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch is a citizen science project for schools across the UK. It takes place alongside\, the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch. \nIt’s easy (and free!) to get involved\, and we find that most children are excited to be a part of this important research. All you have to do is count the bird species you can see in your school\, and then send the results to the RSPB. Easy! \nSubmission for results is open between 6th January – 13th February. \nRSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch has been running for over 20 years\, and the reason it’s been going for so long is that it’s such valuable work. The results that schools submit to the RSPB are used by scientists to help create a picture of how birds are faring across the UK. \nTo register for RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch\, you can follow this link\, which takes you to their website. \n  \nSource: Big Schools’ Birdwatch (rspb.org.uk)

SUMMARY:Brew Monday (BlueMonday)
DESCRIPTION:The third Monday in January is sometimes referred to as ‘the most difficult day of the year’ but this is a myth. \nAt Samaritans\, they know there’s no such thing as ‘Blue Monday’ – we all have our good days and our bad days\, and those aren’t for the calendar to decide. So lets say it’s time to stop this myth about Monday being ‘blue’ and instead start a conversation over a brew! Reach out and connect with family\, friends\, colleagues and loved ones. We can always make time for a cuppa and a catch-up. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Monday morning or Saturday night\, or if you’re drinking green tea\, black coffee or orange juice. If you’re sharing a cuppa and listening\, you’re doing it right. \nSamaritans are there for you round the clock\, every single day of the year. Whatever you’re going through\, call them free any time\, from any phone on 116 123. \n#BlueMonday #BrewMonday #Samaritans #MentalHealth #DepressionAwareness #EmotionalSupport \n  \nSource: https://www.samaritans.org/support-us/campaign/brew-monday/

SUMMARY:Cervical Cancer Prevention Week
DESCRIPTION:This week is Cervical Cancer Prevention Week. \nStatistics show that 1 in 3 people don’t go to their cervical screening appointment due to embarrassment or fear. There’s a lot of built-up stigma around the test\, but it’s one that’s vitally important. \nAccording to the NHS\, the early signs of ovarian cancer can be: \n\na swollen tummy or feeling bloated\npain or tenderness in your tummy or the area between the hips (pelvis)\nno appetite or feeling full quickly after eating\nan urgent need to pee or needing to pee more often\n\nCervical cancer is curable with early detection. It is also very slow to spread\, increasing the chances of cure. All we have to do is test and start treatment before cancer grows. \nTherefore it is crucial that women aged 25 – 64 take up their free cervical screening on the NHS as soon as they receive their invitation. \n  \nFind out more at: Cervical Cancer Prevention Week | Awareness Days \n

SUMMARY:National Hug Day
DESCRIPTION:Open up your heart … and your arms\, this January 21st for National Hug Day! As you might guess\, this day is an annual event dedicated to the underrated art form of the hug. We love all types of hugs\, from the one-armed bro hug to full bear hugs. So let’s get hugging! \nThe simplest and most effective way of expressing affection is celebrated on National Hug Day. Even though a #Hug is one of the most natural gestures\, it’s not practiced enough these days! This holiday encourages hugging\, as a therapeutic way to convey affection and emotions. \nThe word “hug” is believed to come from the word “hugga” meaning “to comfort” in the Old Norse language\, first appearing approximately 450 years ago. However\, the history of hugging itself is a bit more uncertain. What is known is that it is only very recently (within the past 50 years) that we have seen a full acceptance of hugging in public\, separating it from other distinguished displays of affection such as kissing. The widespread adoption of hugging over the recent years has been debated to be due to two primary reasons: the reduced formality of dress code and manners between relationships\, along with the changing behaviours of political figures in pursuit of a more relatable\, warm-hearted perception to the public. \nNowadays\, we don’t even think about the fact that #Hugging in public was considered indecent PDA. We hug to greet friends and family\, to say goodbye\, or to congratulate someone. To console someone or to show support. We hug before sports and performance teams begin their match\, and to show a general sign of affection between intimate relationships. There are also Free Hugs charity fundraisers! \nThe best way National Hug Day is celebrated is by spreading the love and offering a hug to your friends and family. It’s amazing how much difference a simple hug can make. Spend your day letting your nearest and dearest know that you’re there for them by giving them hugs and lifting their spirits. \n  \n#FreeHugs #NationalHugDay2026 #SpreadTheLove \nSource:  NATIONAL HUGGING DAY – January 21\, 2026 – National Today

SUMMARY:Burns Night
DESCRIPTION:The 25th January is known nationally as Burns Night.\n\n\n \n\n\nKnown in medieval Celtic culture as a story teller\, verse maker and composer\, the word ‘Bard’ has become synonymous with the world’s greatest poets. However\, few are as celebrated as Scotland’s own ‘National Bard’\, Robert Burns\, who we pay tribute to on 25 January each year.\n\n\n \n\n\nBorn in Ayrshire in 1759\, Robert Burns is Scotland’s national bard. Affectionately known as ‘the Ploughman Poet’\, his verses stand as a fitting testament to Scotland’s proud literary history.\n\n\n \n\n\nAuld Lang Syne\, perhaps Burns’ most famous work\, is one of the most widely sung songs of the English language. The song has crossed borders and oceans and can be heard across the globe on Hogmanay and New Year.\n\n\n \n\n\nSource:  https://www.scotland.org/events/burns-night\n\n\n \n\n\n#BurnsNight #Scotland #VisitScotland #AuldLangSyne #RobertBurns

SUMMARY:Holocaust Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:Holocaust Memorial Day (#HMD) takes place on 27 January each year and is a time to remember the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust\, under Nazi Persecution and in the genocides which followed in Cambodia\, Rwanda\, Bosnia and Darfur.\n\n\n \n\n\nHolocaust Memorial Day is a time when we seek to learn the lessons of the past and recognise that genocide does not just take place on its own – it’s a steady process which can begin if discrimination\, racism and hatred are not checked and prevented. We’re fortunate here in the UK; we are not at immediate risk of genocide. However\, discrimination has not ended\, nor has the use of the language of hatred or exclusion. There is still much to do to create a safer future and HMD is an opportunity to start this process.\n\n\n \n\n\nThe aims of HMD are laid out in the statement of commitment. HMD activity organisers bring together the diverse strands of their communities to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day in their neighbourhoods. This is a real demonstration of how the lessons of the past can inform our lives today and ensure that everyone works together to create a safer\, better future.\n\n\n \n\n\nEach year thousands of activities take place for HMD\, bringing people from all backgrounds together to learn lessons from the past in creative\, reflective and inspiring ways. From schools to libraries\, workplaces to local authorities\, HMD activities offer a real opportunity to honour the experiences of people affected by the Holocaust and genocide\, and challenge ourselves to work for a safer\, better future.\n\n\n \n\n\n#HolocaustMemorialDay #HumanRights #History #OnThisDay #HMD2026\n\n\n \n\n\nSource:  Holocaust Memorial Day Trust | What is Holocaust Memorial Day?

SUMMARY:Raynaud's Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Raynaud’s Awareness Month is observed in February in the United Kingdom to drive awareness about the condition\, increase advocacy for people suffering from it\, and promote the need for a cure. Up to 10 million people in the UK have a form of Raynaud’s and yet research shows that nearly half of UK adults don’t know any of the signs of Raynaud’s Disease. That’s why it’s so important that we continue to raise awareness.\n\n\n \n\n\nRaynaud’s disease (Ray-nodes) means that the small blood vessels in the extremities such as the hands\, feet\, fingers or toes are over-sensitive to even the slightest changes in temperature\, cold conditions and sometimes emotional stress.\n\n\n \n\n\nWhen our bodies are exposed to the cold\, a normal response is for the blood vessels to become narrower. When someone has Raynaud’s this reaction may be much more extreme. It will sometimes cause a noticeable colour change to the affected areas\, with the skin turning white\, then blue and finally to red as the circulation returns. This is known as a Raynaud’s attack.\n\n\n \n\n\nToo many people just live with Raynaud’s without knowing what it is and how they can manage the symptoms better.  For roughly 300\,000 of them it’s a sign of an underlying condition.   By sharing your stories of what it is like to live with Raynaud’s we are encouraging others to take action. \n\n#KnowRaynauds #Raynauds #ColdWeather\n\nSource:  Raynaud’s | SRUK

SUMMARY:LGBT+ History Month
DESCRIPTION:LGBT+ History Month is a month that’s important to us. Celebrating all parts of who we are is vital to the fight for mental health. And this month\, we’re doing just that. \nIt’s a month when we can all remember the people who fought for LGBTQIA+ rights in the past. A chance for people of all ages to learn more about the rich history of LGBTQIA+ communities. And a moment to remember just how far we’ve come over the years. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLGBTQIA+ mental health\nLGBT+ History Month is also a moment to lift up people’s stories about their mental health. \nBeing LGBTQIA+ does not cause mental health problems. But some things you may go through as an LGBTQIA+ person can make you more likely to experience a mental health problem. \nSome things you may go through if you’re LGBTQIA+ include: \n\nHomophobia\, biphobia and transphobia\nExperiences of stigma and discrimination\nDifficult experiences of coming out\nSocial isolation\, exclusion and rejection\n‘Conversion therapy’\nDifficulties getting the healthcare you need for reasons such as discrimination\, or long waiting lists for gender treatment if you’re trans\n\nIn fact\, because of these issues LGBTQIA+ people are 2 to 3 times more likely to experience a mental health problem. \nAnd many young people experience a lack of inclusive environments – from home to school and beyond. Nearly a quarter of young people who are at risk of homelessness identify as LGBTQIA+. \nThe impact that discrimination and isolation has on the mental health of LGBTQIA+ people is clear\, and avoidable. That’s why we all need to do more to make sure things change – for the better. \nPlease remember you’re not alone. \nIf you’re LGBTQIA+ and are finding things tough\, we have information and tips for you. And a list of places where you can get support below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSource:  Celebrating LGBT+ History Month | Campaigns | Mind \n

DESCRIPTION:Statistically\, in the UK\, the first Monday in February is the day most likely for employees to call in sick – and has subsequently been coined ‘National Sickie Day.’ \nOne of the reasons is the first payday since Christmas\, “meaning people have been out celebrating all weekend with a particularly heavy one”. \nSince physical illness is a much more socially acceptable reason for taking the day off work\, many people use this as a reason instead of telling their boss that they are struggling with mental health issues. But taking a mental health day certainly is an acceptable reason to call off from work. \nMany people find that taking one day of sick leave for stress or mental health  can save a great deal of sick time that might be taken later in the year if those pressures build into something worse. So don’t be afraid to call off work every now and then. Especially on National Sickie Day! \n  \n#MentalHealth #GoodWellbeing #MondayMotivation #Mental Health \n  \n

SUMMARY:National Storytelling Week
DESCRIPTION:National Storytelling Week takes place every year and is a celebration of the power of sharing stories. Stories teach us about the world\, they allow us to step into someone else’s shoes and feel empathy\, they help us to relax and escape and they can help develop essential #Literacy skills. \nIn 2025\, National Storytelling Week will be taking place from 2nd February to 8th February. \nWhat is the theme for National Storytelling Week?\nThe theme for National Storytelling Week 2026 is Soundtrack your story. Everyone has their own musical story – whether it’s in the songs we love and the music we dance to\, through British Sign Language and the rhythms we feel\, the soundscapes of everyday life\, or the soundtracks we hear in films and games. Music connects us to words. It helps us express who we are and how we see the world. \nResearch highlights that exploring stories through lyrics can be an effective way to re-engage young people with reading for enjoyment and writing for pleasure. Slightly more than 3 in 5 (60.7%) children and young people age 8-18 regularly read song lyrics digitally. Writing song lyrics is also popular among children and young people age 8-18\, with slightly less than 1 in 5 (17.8%) reporting that they write lyrics on a screen at least once a month. \nNational Storytelling Week will be a celebration of both storytelling and writing for pleasure. At a time when young people’s writing enjoyment levels are at their lowest\, National Storytelling Week has never been more important. \nThe classroom activities span early years\, primary and secondary\, and we’d love you to take part in all elements for your phase. \n#NationalStorytellingWeek2026 #ReimagineYourWorld \nSource:  National Storytelling Week 2026 Activities\, Events And Resources | National Literacy Trust
