Give and Take Care - West Drayton

"Tackling the adult social care crisis in the UK by mobilising community based volunteers"

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

Give & Take Care (G&TC) is an innovative solution towards tackling the adult social care crisis in the UK. It is a time-banking circular economy system, designed to be a sustainable model for future generations.

Our aims are:

  • To promote person-centred care for older adults (60+) in local communities
  • Alleviate issues of loneliness and isolation
  • Improve the prospects of care for future generations
  • Reduce the ongoing care crisis by expanding the project across the UK

Volunteers opt to provide services depending on their skills, interests and availability, although these must be activities not regulated by the CQC. Care Givers may make daily visits to homes, or less frequently, to help use IT and provide light domestic support. They also help Care Receivers participate in community activities.

G&TC currently works with existing charities who support the elderly or family carers to offer a Care Savings Account. The Care Savings Account allows volunteer Care Givers to bank the hours of care they give to an older adult in their local community (or the family member they already care for). They accrue savings of hours over a period of time and when they turn 60, they can ‘spend’ their Care Credits (GATs – Give and Takes) to receive the care they need from the next generation of volunteers within the same scheme. They can also gift their Care Credits to another appropriate person needing this service.

Our aim is to help local communities develop stronger relationships and help alleviate the social care crisis among older adults across the UK.

Additional Information

Collaborating with Charities

G&TC is collaborating with organisations concerned with supporting older adults and carers in the delivery of the scheme. We are currently active in Rochdale with Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Circle CIC, Leicester with the Sahkar Charity and in Berkshire East and West locations.

Funding and Sustainability Principles

The concept of G&TC is that for every hour of GAT (Give and Take) care received, the Care Receiver will pay a £1 admin fee to support the scheme. This is not a payment for any care itself, but to pay for the recording system, head office, IT and small team of staff running G&TC. Fees may be collected monthly on a Direct Debit. These will be processed by the East of England Co-operative Society.

Alternatively, Partners can sign up to a membership scheme whereby they pay for a set number of GAT hours per annum. If these hours are used before the end of the year, Care Receivers can top-up their GAT hours.
