Wastesavers
"A community not for profit recycling group who run a range of services in SE Wales."
Did you know?- Today Wastesavers recycles more than 15,000 tonnes of material a year and can’t imagine hand sorting the 5000 tonnes of paper it collects. That’s more than 85,000 trees per year! Recycling a caddy load of food waste could generate enough electricity to watch Wales's women in the #WorldCupQualifier against Russia on BBC2 Wales tonight? (Twitter post about 6 months ago!)
Wastesavers began life in 1985 as an environmental, interest group promoting the importance of reuse and recycling. In the mid 90’s it became more proactive and began picking up old newspapers from peoples doorsteps for recycling, and hand sorting these at the local paper mill. Progress has certainly been made in Newport with residents now receiving a weekly kerbside recycling collection of not just paper, but cans, plastics, glass, textiles, mobile phones and toner cartridges as well as food waste and small electrical items.
The primary objectives of Wastesavers Recycling Ltd are:
In partnership with Newport City Council, Wastesavers operates a number of projects to improve the environment and return added benefits for the community. Wastesavers has a turnover of over £2 million and invests any income made back into its projects and the local economy. The charity runs a range of social inclusion programmes which …
* Help people gain the skills needed to find work
* Support older people to get online
* Give young people excluded from school practical skills
* Help people with learning difficulties gain confidence
* Provide low-cost furniture to people in need
* Provide volunteering opportunities for self-development

We collect unwanted quality furniture and household items from Newport and beyond. Our volunteers and staff then clean and test all the items before we put them up for sale online or in our shop. We help people back into work, giving them a range of new skills in a non-pressured atmosphere. We are fully licensed to collect used computers and offer them for sale to the general public.
Hundreds of school children visit our interactive education room every year.
Because mainstream education doesn’t suit everybody. We provide a unique service for local schools, Pupil Referral Units, Social Services, and other support organisations working with young people finding it hard in mainstream education. We do this by providing a practical hands-on learning experience outside the formal classroom setting. Our maximum staff to pupil ratio is one to six, ensuring the best possible opportunity to engage with students. All our staff are highly experienced and fully trained to work with young people. Unlike other providers we offer short term attendance options as well as longer term provision, significantly reducing overall costs to schools and referral units. We have newly refurbished facilities offering a wide range of environments, from plumbing and carpentry workshops to art room and IT suite. Click here to see how we measure success.
