Age Concern Luton

"Making Luton a wonderful place to live and grow old"

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

Age Concern Luton has been helping older people improve their overall quality of life, receive timely practical help, get out and about and retain dignity in later life for nearly 20 years.

We believe that retirement should be a positive experience and that Luton can become a great place in which to grow older.  To help make this happen we are proactive in campaigning and shaping local policy, reactive to local strategic plans, and committed to raising money to fund services that older people tell us are important.

Advice Information & Advocacy Support

Making ends meet that bit easier . Our Enhancing Lives team provide a range of advice, information, and advocacy support.

We know it can be very difficult to admit you are struggling, but our trained team have years of experience and promise to provide a professional, courteous and effective support programme to help you achieve the positive changes you want. Our team of support workers are able to complete benefit forms, apply for benevolent funds, and help you take control of your finances.  We have successfully applied for over £2,000,000 of benefits for older people, and have helped put in place sensible plans to deal with their debts.  We also help people move to more suitable housing, arrange care packages, and provide a wealth of information and advice on matters affecting older people and their carers.

We know that individual problems are often hard to categorise, and so we promise to help any older person from Luton who contacts us either through our support workers or in partnership with other organisations. We receive no funding for Enhancing Lives and are completely reliant on donations in order to continue providing this service.  However this independence ensures we are able to challenge all decisions affecting you which are wrong or unfair. If you need some help, or want some more information, please contact us.

Help in your home

The majority of the work we do with older people involves help around the home. As people age simple tasks might appear daunting, or it may be that the amount of work around the house becomes impossible to manage. Here at Age Concern Luton we believe prevention is better than cure, and so have developed services which allow older people to remain independent in their own homes.

One of the biggest issues for older people is general home maintenance, and keeping the home safe and well maintained over time. Our handymen do a range of jobs from simple tasks like changing light bulbs or rearranging furniture through to much larger skilled work such as constructing hand rails, banisters and steps. Our team are also able to apply for funds and grants for specific home improvements and are able to source reputable local tradesmen to ensure older people get a quality job at the right price.

Home Support

For more regular help around the home we have a Home Support service. This service helps with difficult domestic tasks such as going out and getting the shopping, paying the bills at the post office, all aspects of housework, and washing, drying and ironing clothes.
We send a Home Support Worker into an older person’s home, normally on a weekly basis, to undertake the tasks you need help with. Unless it cannot be avoided we send the same worker every week so as our clients don’t have to continually explain how they like things done, and all involved really get to know each other!
There is a charge for Home Support though this is subsidised through the donations we receive and money we raise and is currently the cheapest in Luton!
If you are interested in using either of these services or would like more information please contact us.

Fun with your friends

Being able to make friendships, socialise and play an active role locally has an amazing affect on people’s happiness. We know (because older people all tell us!) that the most important part of any club is not the venue, food or the activities but is always the company!

We currently run a number of lunch clubs where members can get a freshly cooked hot meal and the opportunity to sit, talk and play games with other people. All our clubs are member led which means we leave it to members to decide what activities should be offered – in the last year we’ve had sing-a-longs, arts & crafts, bingo, quizzes, dominoes, and countless other fun things to do.

It is not always possible for people to attend our clubs though this does not mean these people are any less lonely. We were one of the first organisations in Britain to develop a befriending scheme where volunteer visitors (normally retired people) pop in for a chat and a cuppa with lonely older people. We are always looking for volunteers to visit as there is tremendous demand for this companionship. In order to help those people who would like a visitor but do not have one, as well as those that are not well enough for someone to come round, we provide a telephone friendship club. Again this provides much needed social support to some of Luton’s loneliest people.
We are always open to new members for all these services and would encourage anyone interested to contact us.

Back on your feet

At certain times in your life you might need a lot of help for a short period of time. With our partners at the Clinical Commisioning Group, Luton & Dunstable Hospital, and local health services, we’ve developed a Meet & Greet service for people returning home after a stay in hospital or respite care.

Meet & Greet helps people settle back in at home and our workers make sure that the cupboards are full, beds are made, and everything is in place for the best possible recovery. This service lasts for up to six weeks and is designed to help older people resolve any issues, practical or emotional, that come up in that time. We also provide assistance with making sure future appointments are kept and everything else in the care plan is working properly. This service has been very successful in reducing the amount of people who are re-admitted to hospital!

We are able to give general advice and information regarding healthcare options. This can include helping older people access services from the NHS and our local authority. We are also able to provide assistance finding podiatrists from the private sector as well as visiting opticians and dentists.
If you would like more information about any of the above please contact us.

If you are experiencing a problem or have a concern but aren’t sure if we can help please phone us for a chat.
