Green Island Holiday Trust

"Providing supported holidays for people living with a disability or long term illness"

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

We are a Dorset based charity providing supported holidays for local people living with a disability. Every summer we create a touch of holiday magic by bringing together small groups of holidaymakers with teams of dedicated volunteers for a week of friendship and fun.

We usually organise six holiday weeks a year but our activities have been disrupted by Covid-19 in both 2020 and 2021. We hope to be back running a full schedule of holidays during the summer of 2022.

What We Do

Our Holidays

The holidays are held during the summer months based in fully accessible holiday accommodation, in the heart of the Dorset countryside.

Holidaymakers are accommodated in  accessible cottages alongside a dedicated and experienced team of volunteers who provide 24 hour care and support.    Prior to the holiday each holidaymaker will be visited by the Trust’s Coordinator so that their care and support needs can be assessed. Each holiday starts on a Saturday and finishes the following Friday giving holidaymakers a chance to experience a week away from their normal routine.    Based around a varied programme of activities and outings, the group share a week of friendship, laughter and good food.

Regrettably Covid-19 has resulted in the cancellation of our 2020 holidays and disrupted our 2021 holiday season. We hope that we will be able to resume our full schedule of holidays in the summer of 2022.

Our amazing volunteers are the very heart of the Trust. It is because of their dedication that over the years we have been able to provide so many people with an exceptional holiday experience. Quite simply, without them our holidays would not happen.

You can help us in lots of different ways, depending on the time you have available.

Residential volunteers are an integral part of the holiday group, staying alongside the holidaymakers, sharing the whole holiday experience. As a residential volunteer, you will be on hand to help the holidaymakers with whatever is needed, for example they might need help with their mobility, communication, or personal care. You will participate in the holiday activities and outings and spend a fair bit of time chatting and eating cake!

Other volunteers help with specific activities or tasks during the holiday weeks. As an activity volunteer you might lead an activity or entertainment session or lend a hand by driving a minibus.

Behind the scenes there are opportunities to help us with our fundraising and spreading the word about our activities.
