Dawlish Twinning Association

"To broaden people's horizons by promoting friendships in another country"

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

Dawlish has been twinned with Carhaix-Plouguer in central Brittany since 1977. We run a four-day group visit each year, with Carhaix receiving visitors one year and Dawlish returning the hospitality the next. We have also fostered a link between Westcliff Primary Academy and a primary school in Carhaix, with pupils exchanging information and resources.

Twinning is non-political and is based around the idea of promoting good community links and friendship with similarly sized communities in other countries.  It gives us both an opportunity to sample the other's culture and cuisine.  It also gives many a chance to practise their foreign language skills although being unable to speak the other language is no reason not to join us!

We welcome everyone regardless of age or background although we would expect the very young to join with their parents.  We receive no subsidies but try to keep expenses to a minimum through our own fund-raising activities.  We have a small annual membership subscription.

We organise a range of social events throughout the year, such as quizzes, skittles evenings and visits to local attractions.  All our exchange trips to Carhaix  have a flexible programme, which usually includes a welcome reception, informal meals and sightseeing visits.  We generally stay in the homes of our hosts and many long-term friendships have been formed over the years.
