Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes
ROC NI brings together community groups, churches, the police, the fire service, local authorities and voluntary agencies to encourage them to work together in positive partnerships for practical ‘on the ground’ change. As a result, statutory agencies have improved access to the support of community/church groups, and thousands of volunteers are enabled to better serve the needs of their community.
ROC Café Crumlin Road
The Monday night drop-in welcomes over 60 primary school aged children to Crumlin Road Presbyterian Church in North Belfast. The ROC Café aims to develop stronger relationships with the children and their families as well as providing a safe environment for all to learn, play and grow. The children enjoy a variety of activities including arts and crafts, football, games, board games, pool tables and a tuck shop. Last year ROC Café Crumlin Road partnered with Barnardo’s Northern Ireland to improve children’s numeracy and literacy. Barnardo’s staff and ROC Volunteers led two programmes – ‘Awesome Science’ programme for Key Stage 2 members and ‘Pirates Ahoy’ literacy and numeracy programme for Key Stage 1 members.
ROC Café Derriaghy
The Friday evening youth drop-in welcomes 30 young people in P7 to Year 10. The ROC Café is based in Bethany Church of the Nazarene and has a packed programme of activities, themed nights and programmes. The ROC Café is having a significant impact in these young lives that parents have had to adjust their weekend schedules accordingly.
ROC Millbrook
A Wednesday evening drop-in for young adults living in the Millbrook area of Larne. The drop-in is informal with lots of chat, food and time together. Last year the group participated in a media project exploring the social history of their estate. The project in partnership with Bauer Academy and CoolFM was facilitated by Downtown Radio presenter Kirstie McMurray. The group interviewed older members of their community, capturing their memories onto an audio podcast. The project, funded by Awards for All Northern Ireland, developed confidence and skills within the group as well as providing new experiences and opportunities.
ROC Care Rathcoole
Is a befriending scheme providing weekly visits or phone calls to socially isolated and lonely people living in Rathcoole, Newtownabbey. The new project in partnership with Newtownabbey Methodist Mission receives referrals from local service providers and groups in the area. As well as the visits from befriender volunteers, clients are also encouraged to build confidence in being outside the home through our ‘Health and Well-being’ programme and special events. ROC Café Rathfern
ROC Café Rathfern is a lively youth drop-in for teenagers aged 12 to 16 living in the Rathfern area of Newtownabbey. The ROC Café meets on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm to 8.30pm in Rathfern Social Activity Centre. Each week there is a range of activities on offer – football, tuck shop, games as well as trips and special events. The ROC Café is the newest ROC Café in Northern Ireland opening in November 2017, four months after ROC facilitated a ROC Conversation for Christian Communications Network (CCN) who were already running a youth club and job club in the area.
ROCNI Network
Monthly gatherings for ROCNI volunteers and partner churches. The ROCNI Network aims to support, train and equip volunteers to be more effective in their roles. From prayer gatherings to first-aid training and a night at the Christmas market, the ROCNI Network provides opportunities for volunteers across Northern Ireland to meet, share stories and learn from one another.
