What We Do

For those suffering with an eating disorder

If you've noticed you're experiencing distorted thoughts and behaviours around food or eating and are concerned you might be developing a problem, it's important to talk through some of your concerns and seek information and reassurance. We're here to listen to any worries you may have and to talk through with you some of the signs of an eating disorder, offering guidance and information about the support we can provide and the relevant professional help for you.  We have telephone helplines which are open from 9:30-5.30pm Monday-Friday. We are also the only charity offering adults (18 years and above) one to one on-going recovery support through our befriending service. This service links people who are struggling with an eating disorder with someone who has recovered. A befriender’s knowledge and experience of recovery provides the person with hope, encouragement and guidance.

For family and friends

We know how difficult it is for you when the person you care about has an eating disorder or appears to be developing one. We understand the feelings; the fear for their physical and emotional wellbeing, the uncertainty – not being able to see the way forward or have hope for recovery. For family members there is often unnecessary guilt, the sense of isolation, the exhaustion and differences of opinion within the family as to how best to handle things. We have telephone helplines which are open from 9:30-5.30pm Monday-Friday and are open to those suffering with an eating disorder and well as family and friends. We also have a number of books available in our online store and an online chat room.

Volunteer

There are many ways to volunteer for ABC and make a difference:

Training

If you’re a professional and looking to volunteer your skills and experience for a worthwhile cause, consider becoming part of our training team and help us to raise awareness and improve understanding of eating disorders. ABC delivers preventative training to schools, colleges, universities, corporate organisations and healthcare departments.

Befriending

Use your personal experience of an eating disorder and recovery to support a person currently struggling. Becoming a Befriender is a very rewarding way to help guide someone along the road to recovery, and you will need to commit to one weekly telephone conversation with your Befriendee.

Fundraising

Taking part in an event for ABC also means something very special to every one of our supporters, most of whom have been personally affected by an eating disorder and are dedicated to raising awareness of the effects on individuals and their families. Some of our supporters take part in sponsored events for ABC to honour the life of a loved one they've lost. There are a number of sponsored events listed on our website that you can get involved in. Or why not create your own fundraising event?

Volunteer

We are always looking for people to volunteer person at our local office in Bristol. This currently includes the role of admin assistant and social media assistant. Please get in contact to find out more.
