ROC Tavistock
"Connecting Local People to Build a Safer, Kinder Community"
ROC (Redeeming Our Communities) is a national Community Enhancement Charity which encourages partnerships between faith and community voluntary groups to help fill known gaps in local provision.
ROC Tavistock was set up in 2018 after a "ROC Conversation" was held in Tavistock Town Hall where 150 people met together to look at what is good in the Tavistock Area community and what is lacking. We were addressed by Debra Green who is the national director and the Chief Constable before breaking up into small groups to evaluate what is needed in our community.
Four Areas of Need were identified:
1. Young People and Digital Safety
2. Loneliness & Isolation
3. Mental Health & Addictions
4. Communications & Mapping
Following on , ROC Tavistock has networked with partners to set up:
+ Tavistock Area Men in Sheds (TAMIS) for the 50 and over age range to provide practical skills and opportunities for older men to do community projects as well as enjoy good friendly company - partnering with Men in Sheds UK. Open Monday 10-12 and Wed 2-4 at Kings' Tavistock
+ A weekly Language Club for Ukrainian guests in Tavistock to enable them to meet together and improve their English skills in a fun and friendly atmosphere - partnering with the Salvation Army and Tavistock Area Christians Together. Open Tuesdays 5pm-7pm at URC Tavistock
+ Tavistock Food Hub providing cheap food items from surplus to help families and avoid food waste, This is also a social occasion with a free café and opportunities to signpost other help where needed, -partnering with Feeding Devon and Devon and Cornwall Food Action. Open Wed 11am-12.30 at King's Tavistock
ROC Tavistock is part of the Tavistock Area Health and Well-being Alliance and can also be contacted by email at : [email protected] . We are always considering new projects and partnerships particularly where centred on the four areas highlighted above.
Whether you are a community leader, spokesperson for an organisation or concerned local citizen and would like to help in any of the above projects, you can contact me, David Palmer, Tavistock ROC Co-ordinator at the email address above.
Sometimes the need we see around us is overwhelming and we may even feel that our contribution could make little difference. However, as Edmund Burke said “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing” and this is why we want to redeem communities across the UK.
In 1994 as I reflected on the needs of the city of my birth I wrote these words:
"In our dreams and visions we see crime rates dropping, violence decreasing, drug dealers disappearing, prostitution declining and apathy diminishing. We see business booming, housing improving, schools flourishing and hope rising".
We have seen all these things in some measure and the work we do has spread across the UK, but there is still so much more we can do together to build safer, kinder communities for the sake of the next generation.
