Bath & North East Somerset Young Carers' Centre

"Helping young carers of all ages who live in Bath and North East Somerset."

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

Lots of different situations can mean a young person is a carer and they can have all kinds of responsibilities at home.

Young carers all know what it feels like to care for another person. They understand that caring can sometimes make their life more difficult and affect their feelings. It can also bring a great sense of achievement and reward.

Young carers could be looking after a mum or dad, brother or sister or even a grandparent who is ill, frail, has a disability or problem with their mental health. They could also be looking after someone who has a drug or alcohol problem.

Being a young carer means helping a member of the family with things they can’t manage, like washing and dressing, cleaning, shopping and cooking. It can mean looking after money and paying bills, giving medicine at the right time and making sure the person they care for is OK.

Sometimes young carers may need to listen or be on hand to help if the person they look after feels unhappy or has problems with their emotions.

Are you a child or young adult (5 -25) looking after someone in your family who is ill, frail, disabled; perhaps has problems with their mental health or with drugs or alcohol? If you are, then the Carers’ Centre can help you.

What We Do

If you contact us, there are lots of ways we can support you. You may need some help at home or at school. You perhaps need someone to talk to, or the chance to make new friends. Through the Carers’ Centre you can find out about other young carers who feel just like you do, and get the chance to spend time out from caring so that you can have a life of your own.

One to one support

If you contact the Carers’ Centre, a Young Carers' Officer will arrange to meet with you and find out more about how being a young carer affects you and your life. This is so that they can find ways you can get the help you need. When you meet, it can be away from the person you care for so that you can talk openly about how you feel.

The Young Carers’ Officer will listen to you and respect your views. They will help plan to make sure you can manage better.

Here’s what you’ll be asked about:

  • what you feel about caring
  • how you are coping at school
  • how you help the person you care for
  • what you do for fun and when you see your friends
  • what you do to be healthy
  • if you can cope with being a carer
  • if you understand all you need to about the person you look after
  • what you are thinking about for your future

Everything you talk about will be treated confidentially – this means no one can talk to anyone outside of the Carers’ Centre about you. But if your Young Carers’ Officer is worried about your safety they may need to get you some more help – but they will always talk to you about this first.

Breaks and activities

Young carers often miss out on opportunities that other children and young people have to play, learn, be with friends and have a life of their own. The Carers’ Centre arranges FREE activities during weekends and in school holidays where you can meet other young carers, relax and have fun, visit new and exciting places and get involved in our work.

If you want to enjoy an activity with the Carers’ Centre, but need help with transport, we can help you get to and from an activity or event. We can also discuss with you the possibility of help with care cover for the person you look after if you need it – so nothing should stop you from having some fun!
During every school holiday and half term, there’s something on offer for all age groups – from visiting a theme park to going to see a film and from taking a trip to the seaside to enjoying a pizza-feast in a restaurant.

Give us a call to see what breaks and activities are coming up.

17 - 25s

We have a special transition service for 18-25s to help you continue to access support and we'll put on breaks and activities especially for this age group.

Get Healthy, Stay Healthy

We know that being a carer of any age can have an impact of your health. It often means that you don’t have time to eat as healthily as you would like to, get the chance to do activities or exercise as often as you should, or sometimes we end up making unhealthy choices to help us cope with the stresses of what’s happening at home.

Our Wellbeing Navigators are here to help you tackle some of your health worries and give you a quick MOT and help you tackle any problems you might have as well as offering you access to breaks to improve your health and wellbeing, like horse riding or a massage.

Moving Forward

We are here to provide advice and support for any issues you might be facing.
The Carers’ Centre can offer extra help with personal support and advice around budgeting and managing money, debt advice and making sure you are getting all the benefits you are entitled to.
There’s also help and advice about local college courses and applying for jobs. You can take part in workshops to help you create a really good CV to help you with looking for work.

Volunteer

Fundraising

The Carers’ Centre is a registered charity and relies on fundraising events and activities to help bring in much-needed resources. Lots of different fundraising activities are organised by volunteers and staff at the Carers’ Centre. Young carers could get together and do a sponsored walk, silent disco or whatever else you can come up with!
Sometimes, simply getting involved and spreading the word about fundraising activities can give you ideas and inspiration.
If you’ve got some fundraising ideas or want to get involved, contact the Carers’ Centre for free from a landline: 0800 0388 885 or from a mobile call: 01761 431388 (standard call charges apply). Or you can just send us an email.

Have a look at the Carers' Centre website for fundraising activities that are coming up.

Additional Info

For Parents

If there is a child with caring responsibilities in your family, whether they are caring for you or another family member, they will sometimes need extra help and support. Check out our eligibility criteria here

There may not be any choice – leaning on your child for help and support may be the only option you have if there is no one else. Your child will naturally want to help care for family members, and if they have grown up with someone regularly needing their support, it may feel like second nature to them to be a young carer.

The health and well-being of your child is really important. However, research shows that young carers are more than twice as likely as their peers not to be in education, employment or training and many have not taken a break of more than two days since they started caring.

If your child or children are young carers, or if you too are a carer for a child, partner or family member who can’t manage without your support, you can get help for the whole family from the Carers’ Centre.

Eligibility for Young Carers' Service

Young carers come from all kinds of families and backgrounds and can be aged from as young as 5 up to 17 years. Young adult carers up to the age of 25 can also receive support from the Carers’ Centre, as can whole families in a caring situation.

We also have a transitional service for young adult carers aged 18 - 25 to help support those coming from children's services to adults.

Any young person who cares for a relative in their family can be referred to the Carers’ Centre
