There are 21,000 people in the Swindon area who have a caring responsibility for a friend, neighbour or member of their family. When someone finds themselves in this situation, quite often they do not know who to turn to for help, what they are entitled to and what support is out there. This is where Swindon Carers Centre come in, helping carers of all ages with our team of dedicated support workers, benefits advice workers, self-help groups, emergency card scheme and events programme.
“I felt very low and vulnerable when I first registered with Swindon Carers Centre but now I feel much more confident and able to cope; I put a lot of that down to the support and activities I have been able to access.”

We have a team of professionals and trained volunteers who provide a wide range of support and services. If you are looking after an ill, frail or disabled family member, partner or friend, then you are a carer. The person you look after may be elderly, have a physical or mental health condition, a learning disability or a drug or alcohol dependency (diagnosed or undiagnosed).
We aim to work together to find the support that may make your caring role more manageable. When a carer first contacts us, we go through a registration process to make sure we’re the most appropriate place for you to come for support. Once we’ve understood your needs, we can help in various ways.
Do you care for a child or young person under 18 with special needs? Does your child have a disability either diagnosed or undiagnosed? It could be a physical disability, learning disability or emotional/behavioural condition. Then you are a parent carer and we are here to support you.
Young carers are children who look after someone in their family. This may be a parent, brother, sister or other family member who has a illness, physical or learning disability, a mental health problem or misuse of drugs or alcohol. A young carer usually takes on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally by expected of an adult.
A Young Carer Support Practitioner will arrange to visit the young carer and their family to discuss their caring responsibilities, what is happening in the home and how we can help to support.
When we receive a referral, our teams will contact you to complete a short registration and assessment process. This is an opportunity to discuss your caring role and the services that can support support and assistance. Our Carers Support Line is available for our registered carers to call, and we also offer 1:1 advice and support.
Do you worry about what would happen to the adult/child you care for if you were taken ill or had an accident? If so, the Emergency Card Scheme can offer you peace of mind.
It is important that you take care of your own health and wellbeing, even if you are busy looking after somebody else. Time away from your caring role is important. Being a carer can be hard work and sometimes, you might need to take a break and have a little time for you doing something you enjoy.
Our Benefits Service offers benefits and welfare advice for carers. We want to ensure that carers understand what benefits and welfare they may be entitled to and assist with making claims.
