The Young Lives Foundation
"Supporting vulnerable & disadvantaged young people through times of difficulty & distress"
Did you know? - YLF supports over 3000 vulnerable people each year.
The Young Lives Foundation is a dedicated children’s charity committed to improving the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people across Kent & Medway.
Our Vision is that every young person in need shall have access to the resources and opportunities needed for them to achieve their potential and lead fulfilled lives.
Demand for our services continues to increase and our trained team of staff and dedicated volunteers work hard to ‘make a difference’ to as many children and vulnerable people in need as possible across our region.
Watch our short video created and launched by our very own young people who bring to life the stigma faced daily by children in care & care leavers across the country.
What we do:
Here at YLF we work to support young people through times of difficulty and distress, whilst enabling their voices to be heard and allowing them to achieve their full potential.
Who we support:
Looked after children / care leavers
Children in need / on the edge of care
Young offenders / at risk of offending
NEET young people / disengaged in education
Vulnerable adults
Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children
Families in need of support
Children who have been adopted
How we do it:
We carry out our work through a variety of services such as those below:
“Words can’t express the gratitude I feel when I think about what you have done for me and the difference it has made to my life. You were there when I wanted to talk about my problems and I felt I was treated like an individual. I could open up and you would listen without judgement. Thanks"
“We’ve been delighted the progress some of our more needy children have made. The difference it has made has been so obvious. Children on the verge of exclusion are now engaging with the school, they are happier in class and more willing to participate. The families have also noticed a positive change.”
“We do so much together – she’s become a good friend and someone I can rely on. She encourages me and I can talk about things that are worrying me.”
We provide a number of services including: - Advocacy & Children's Rights , Mentoring & Befriending, and Positive Activities (Please click on the green links for further details)
Our trained volunteer mentors motivate, guide and assist young people considered to be at risk of offending, socially excluded or in need of support. There are a number of reasons why a young person and their family may benefit from having a mentor. A mentor supports a young person by meeting with them once a week over a period of 6 months. Within the time together they help their young person achieve goals that have been set, such as building confidence.
Our trained volunteers visit, advise and befriend young people in care and take a long-term interest in their well-being and development. Young people may experience multiple changes of placement, carer and social worker during their time in care. Often our volunteer independent visitors are the only consistent adult in the young people’s lives.
Our advocates will be alongside young people at important meetings, speaking on their behalf or encouraging and enabling them to speak up for themselves. Our advocates support young people by enabling them to have their voices heard in looked-after child reviews, care proceedings and Family Group Conferences and on issues such as education, placements, leaving care and family contact. YLF Positive Activities provide a
fun, supportive and safe setting for young people to engage in
new opportunities and social experiences. The young people engaging
in these activities are children in care and include those with learning or
behavioural difficulties, special educational needs or coming from
disadvantaged backgrounds.
Our positive activities programmes offer:
Whether you want to gain new experiences, develop a career path or simply give a little spare time, being a YLF volunteer will make a HUGE difference to the lives of young people!

We need your support to help us change lives. Fundraising for YLF is a fun and gratifying way of supporting our work. All donations ensure that we can continue to offer the best services for local children.
Throughout the year YLF have a number of events that you can join in with and support. Take a look at what we have coming up!
During seasonal periods such as Christmas and Easter, many young people who we support would not normally receive many gifts, so a donated gift can make a huge difference and let young people know they are thought of. YLF also regularly host prize draws and auctions at events and stalls, and donated gifts help keep fundraising costs low ensuring fundraised money goes directly to our front line services. In return we can publicly thank you or your business and promote your services where possible. Please get in touch with Karen if you have a gift you would like to donate [email protected]
MCYPC (Medway):
Medway's Children and Young People Council is a forum of young people who work to give a voice and make a big difference to those in care and leaving care. The MCYPC believe you can make a BIG DIFFERENCE. We also believe that knowledge is power.
Appropriate Adults:
Our appropriate adults support young people or vulnerable adults, when parents or carers are not available. They ensure that those detained by the police understand their rights and when necessary they will act on behalf of the detained person to protect those rights.
Accompanying Adults:
When a local authority does not accept what an unaccompanied asylum-seeking child says about their age, two social workers undertake an age assessment. Volunteer accompanying adults act independently from the local authority to ensure that age assessment interviews are conducted properly and fairly.
Independent Person:
An Independent Person (IP) is appointed to oversee the process of a Stage Two Complaints Investigation about children’s services. An IP will work alongside the Investigating Officer (IO) to provide an independent and objective view to the investigation of the complaint.
