What We Do

We provide free and low cost services to older people in Portsmouth, including an Information & Advice service, services for veterans, activities for older people, basic foot care etc. (Please click on the green links below for further details)

Information & Advice

Age UK Portsmouth offers a free and confidential information and advice service for older people, their families and carers on a range of issues.

Call 023 9288 3500 for an appointment with our I&A team. 

Benefits and entitlements checks

We have a team of trained staff and volunteers who can check to see if you are entitled to claim any welfare or disability benefits, and can help you through the claims process from start to finish. If needed we can give you assistance filling in all of the forms.

Legal issues

Every two weeks legal advisors from Biscoes Solicitors offer free 20 minute appointments at the Bradbury Centre to provide advice on matters such as Wills, Power of Attorney, Probate and other legal issues.

Help Around The Home

We can help you with cleaning, shopping and other household jobs in the PO1 to PO9 postcode areas. 

Our Help Around The Home service is designed to assist older people who may need a little extra help and support to maintain their independence at home. We have a team of Home Assistants ready to help you with your cleaning, shopping and other general household jobs. 

Gardening Service

Our garden maintenance service offers customers a professional and friendly service carried out by experienced staff who are DBS checked. Our gardeners use all their own professional, petrol-powered equipment but may occasionally need access to an electricity supply or an outside water tap for some jobs.

Bradbury Centre Café

Our café at the Bradbury Centre offers a varied selection of tasty and nutritious home-cooked meals, hot snacks, breakfast baps, sandwiches, wraps, jacket potatoes, paninis and daily specials, all prepared by our own chef from fresh local produce. 

The café is open Monday to Friday from 9.00am with last food orders at 2.00pm. For further information ring us on 023 9288 3504.

Beauty Treatments

Independent, professional beauty therapist Jodie Martin offers a number of different beauty treatments and therapies  to clients at the Bradbury Centre with appointments available from 10.00am to 4.00pm every Wednesday and Thursday.

Footcare Services.

Age UK Portsmouth holds regular footcare surgeries at the Bradbury Centre each week with appointments available Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays call 023 9286 2121 for more information and to book.

Hairdressing Salon

We have a comfortable and fully-equipped hair salon at the Bradbury Centre where independent hairdresser Donna offers a warm and friendly hairdressing service  at very competitive prices.

Veterans Services 

We have a range of services aimed at veterans and their dependents in Portsmouth, and most are completely free of charge. 

  • Befriending service - We have a befriending service for lonely and isolated veterans, where we match you with a volunteer befriender who will provide anything from chatting about service life or ‘good old days’, to helping you feel more confident and going out and about.
  • Information service - Our information service just for veterans and can help you with a range of issues including; Getting War and Armed Forces Pensions, Mental health support including PTSD, Family and personal matters and applying for a service medal or Veterans badge.
  • Monthly events - for veterans and their dependents. Coffee club is the last Thursday of the month 14:00-16:00 and breakfast club is the second Thursday of every month 9:00-11:00.

  • Boogie Mites Music Group - Come and enjoy an intergenerational musical experience with Boogie Mites at the Bradbury Centre.B oogie Mites Portsmouth and Age UK Portsmouth have joined together to create an intergenerational musical activity group. The group meets at 12.30pm on the first Thursday of every month at the Bradbury Centre in Kingston Road, Portsmouth.
  • Veteran's Breakfast Club - Age UK Portsmouth have set up a new Breakfast Club for Forces veterans at the Bradbury Centre which takes place on the second Thursday of every month from 09:00 to 11:00am. All ex-service personnel are welcome to come along, together with their partners, to socialise with other veterans, take part in the banter and enjoy a great breakfast. Spaces are limited for the Breakfast Club so we recommend that you give us a ring to confirm your attendance and ensure that we can accommodate you.   • Veterans' Coffee Club - We have set up a new Coffee Club for Forces veterans at the Bradbury Centre Café which is held on the last Thursday of each month from 14:00 to 16:00. We will have occasional guest speakers and attendees will be welcome to bring along photographs and other memorabilia to share their memories of their days in the service with other veterans.   • The Big Knit 2018/19 - We’re delighted to announce the Big Knit is back for 2018! Last year in Portsmouth we knitted 3,500 hats, this year we are aiming to knit even more with a target of 5,000. We can't do it without your help and we will be grateful for each and every lovely hat that you knit for us. It’s a joint campaign between the national charity Age UK and Innocent Drinks to raise funds to help vulnerable older people. Over the last 13 years, knitters have raised around £2million for Age UK. Innocent Drinks gives Age UK Portsmouth 25p for each mini hat (knitted in Portsmouth and sent off via The Bradbury Centre) sold, so we want you to knit as many as possible.

Dementia Friends

Age UK Portsmouth proudly supports Dementia Friends and many of the charity’s staff and volunteers have participated in the information sessions. Being Age UK Portsmouth-based Dementia Friends means that we have taken the time to learn a little bit more about dementia, and what it may feel like to have the condition. This in turn helps us to treat those interacting with us with greater understanding, patience and support often ensuring an enhanced and sometimes personalised social experience at The Bradbury Centre.
