Walking for Wellness
"Providing activities and support to people living with dementia in Stockport and surrounding areas"
Walking for Wellness was established in April 2016 to provide walking and other activities for people living with dementia and memory issues in the south Manchester, Stockport, and surrounding areas.
Participants cover a wide range of abilities. Walks are tailored to individual’s needs so whether it’s a walk round a local park or a 5 mile walk in the countryside, Walking for Wellness will support you and provide opportunities to meet like-minded friends.
“Leading a physically active lifestyle can have a significant impact on the wellbeing of people with dementia. Exercise is beneficial for physical and mental health and may improve the quality of life for people in all stages of the condition” (Alzheimer’s Society factsheet – April 2015).
Walking for Wellness offers people with memory issues, Alzheimer’s, and other forms of dementia, opportunities to continue their love of walking – whether it’s around a park or a 5 mile journey in the countryside.
This is often in small groups of 2 or 3 but can be done individually where more appropriate. Activities usually last 2-3 hours but this is negotiable and includes transportation and a break at a café or pub!
Participants are collected and returned home and supported with their individual needs. Activities take place Monday to Friday (weekends by negotiation) and you can decide how many hours you wish to do per week.
We also do other activities (especially when the weather is bad!) such as visiting places of interest, museums, social events etc. Individuals have also been supported in following their own interests such as playing table tennis, walking football, cycling, and fishing…

Local authorities have a duty to offer direct payments to eligible people (including people with dementia) who are willing and able to manage them, either with or without assistance.
A direct payment can be used to employ a Personal Assistant (PA) to support someone with dementia in relation to a wide range of tasks and activities. This includes services such as Walking for Wellness.
You will need to contact your local authority to find out if you are eligible for financial support and how much.
