"Offering confidential emotional support to children, young adults & adults by phone, email & post"

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

Welcome to SupportLine. We offer confidential emotional support to children, young adults and adults by telephone, email and post. The service is particularly aimed at those who are vulnerable, isolated, at risk and victims of any form of abuse. We specialise in providing support for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse and survivors of adult abuse.

We deal with a wide range of issues including bullying, eating disorders, self harm, domestic violence, bereavement, mental health, anxiety and depression and we work with callers to develop healthy, positive coping strategies, an inner feeling of strength and increased self esteem to encourage healing, recovery and moving forward with life.

We also keep details of counsellors, agencies and support groups throughout the UK.

Much of SupportLine's work involves supporting adult survivors of childhood sexual, emotional and physical abuse and in light of the media focus on the Jimmy Savile and others cases of abuse, and the impending Child Sexual Abuse Inquiry an increasing number of survivors are turning to SupportLine for help and support.

  • To produce information literature which can be forwarded to callers on specific issues.
  • To provide a high quality and reliable service to all users.
  • To provide continuous support, training and development for staff members/helpline workers.

Problems

SupportLine is particularly aimed at those who are isolated, at risk, vulnerable and victims of any form of abuse.  We receive many referrals via NAPAC (National Association for People Abused in Childhood) who give our number on a regular basis to survivors who are in need of emotional support and help. SupportLine was one of the agencies which the BBC Audience Lines used as a source of referral to accompany its series of programmes "Hunt for Britain's Paedophiles".

We were used also by BBC Audience Lines to support callers after the Panorama programme on Paedophiles grooming young children over the internet and also after the programme on the Magdalene Laundries highlighting the abuse of young people and programmes relating to Jimmy Savile. Our number has also been given to callers who have contacted the New Scotland Yard Anti-Paedophile Unit and used by other Police Forces as a means of support for survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

Additional Info

Sponsorship of our work and events

We are always looking for companies to sponsor areas of our work such as Annual Report, Publicity Material which is distributed throughout the UK, Fundraising events e.g. Celebrity Football Match & Fun Day, match programme, printing publicity material, sponsorship of match ball. Major sponsors are invited to the aftermatch reception with the celebrities and have their details included on all publicity. Additional sponsorship of events would enable us to hold more fundraising events throughout the year thereby raising much needed funds

Confidentiality

SupportLine is a confidential service. We do not use Caller Display Equipment and therefore have no way of tracing callers. There are, however, some circumstances where we would break confidentiality.

  • When we feel a caller or someone a caller talks about is in life threatening danger and the caller has given their contact details to us.
  • When we have the caller’s permission to speak to a third party.
  • When we feel a caller is deliberately preventing us from carrying out our service.
  • When a caller threatens volunteers/staff and it is felt their safety may be at risk.
  • When we have a court order to divulge information.
  • When we have bomb warnings or information about terrorism.

There may be occasions when a call may be listened into by another helpline support worker/staff member, to assist us in training new helpline support workers, to give support to the helpline support worker in particularly distressing calls and to monitor our service to ensure we are giving the best possible service to callers.

Emails

When we receive an email it is possible for the helpline support worker to see your email address which is confidential within the agency. We have no means of tracing you unless you give us your contact details (phone number/address).

Poetry

Many survivors find it therapeutic and healing to write about their feelings and we are grateful to all those who have chosen to share their feelings with others here.
