Wellbeing in Action

"Tackling things that harm physical & emotional wellbeing so people can live their best lives."

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

All humans have times where their lives feel contented and, even if we haven't achieved everything we wish for in life, we're pretty happy with where we are.  And, of course, every one of us hits difficult times when life is far from contented, even to feeling pointless.  Every one of us has opportunity to extend a hand in help, and sometimes to reach out a hand for a little help.   Wellbeing in Action navigate that transaction between people - not giving out charity, but enabling people to receive support when it's needed and paying it forward when times are better.

It is this down to earth, practical understanding of kindness and how it tends to spread from person to person, and right across communities that makes such a massive impact on the things that cause harm to our wellbeing.

Wellbeing can be felt in our physical health, our mental health, our financial security, our emotional relationships (whether we feel lonely or isolated, for example) and as a community together.   Wellbeing in Action have a simple motto - 'If we can - We do'.  Where something presents a threat to wellbeing, if we have the creativity, ideas, tools and resources, we set about removing the threat and putting in something that makes it better.   We do that by joining people together in a spirit of one for all, and all for one.

We don't put limits on the kind of practical solutions we find but they can be providing therapy and counselling, support groups, mentors and befrienders.  They can be about connecting people to combat loneliness and help people feel valued for their skills and contribution.   They can be very practical things like helping someone who is vulnerable to improve their living conditions - food, clothing, household goods or practical tasks like basic DIY.  They can be about giving someone an experience they never thought possible - a sanctuary retreat for a family supporting a loved one through palliative care or coming to terms with a bereavement, or giving a free prom dress to a young woman who has suffered trauma and lives with acute anxiety.  They might be about getting young mums together or giving support to dads who have become separated from their children, lunch clubs to combat loneliness, activities for children missing out on education or community health clinics from vaccinations to menopause!  Or it might be about helping someone with debt management or someone facing eviction to sort Court paperwork and being at their side to give them courage to deal with the problems.

We don't concur with popular themes for the sake of it - we don't believe 'it's o.k to not be o.k', for example.  It's definitely o.k to talk about what's not right, but it's not o.k to live with that situation permanently.  We don't believe in simply sharing optimistic memes and social media posts encouraging people to know we always have an open door for them - unless we really mean it and can practically put that into action.

Wellbeing in Action meet every challenge with curiosity and a mind to find a solution. Every unique individual who comes through our door is welcomed as one of our family and if we can't do something ourselves, we probably know someone who can!

To make this happen we need people... people who have a generous heart and donate ‘stuff’ (a professional term!) or funding when only money can help - people who volunteer their time and skills, people who have had hard times themselves and feel proud to help someone else benefit from their experience.

If you feel you need help, get in touch.  No request is ignored.  We can't promise an immediate magic wand, but we'll share the load and try to help.

If you feel you have something to give, get in touch.  Volunteering and being connected is a great way to build yourself, make new friends, learn new skills and take steps into unexpected careers.

The heart of our project is in our title -  Action.  It speaks louder in our humble opinion!

Volunteer

We rely on volunteers as the heart beat of all that we do.  There are lots of ways to get involved, from a simple donation to working in our team:

1.  Make a donation - even £1 adds up and makes a huge difference to how much we can achieve.

2.  Get involved as one of our awareness raising ambassadors - attending events and educating people about wellbeing and how to care for it.  Visit schools, speak at conferences, help with training professionals, speak about your experience to others in a similar situation.

3.  Become part of our fundraising team:  putting together all kind of events and crazy activities that are fun, build your skills and connect you to new friends - from running a marathon to setting up a glittering ball, or just baking a cake and inviting friends over for a fundraising coffee morning... use your talents and interests to set the scene!

4.  Join our training programme and become a peer support leader for one of our groups, or a personal mentor or befriender (working with vulnerable individuals to provide them support in their lives) or as a legal advisor at our law clinics.  We provide a free DBS check, induction to our policies and training around key issues you may encounter such as mental health, homelessness, debt counselling etc.

Our volunteers are valued and we provide an annual celebration and Awards event, qualifications, valuable experience on your CV and references, ongoing support with starting other qualifications and support to start new careers in this field.  We also believe in growing our own workforce from the frontline - ensuring people who have lived experience of how wellbeing can be harmed, and how to be resilient, are the ones who go on to lead others.  After 300 hours of volunteering you will be eligible to apply for paid positions ahead of external recruitment.

Did we miss anything?  Suggest it to us and we'll see how we can involve you in our world!
