Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes
There
are many factors which we find can impact young carers; increased likelihood
of isolation, not feeling ‘normal’, ‘hiding’ feelings and home life, a
reduced sense of belonging, reduced opportunities for social life and
friendships and a strain on education. Being a young carer can also affect a
young person’s own well-being, with worry and anxiety being something that
many young carers experience. When a young carer is identified, this is often
the first time a young person feels acknowledgement that they are a young
carer and can start to explore what that means for them. This is where
bringing young carers together, those ‘lightbulb’ moments begin of realising
they are not alone, and it is this shared understanding and sense of
belonging we have observed is important to improving well-being for each
young carer.
“I got a chance to be myself for a while”
“I can meet people just like me who care for people to. It really helps me
to fit in at school”
“Young carers makes me feel happy and makes me feel good about myself
because I can talk to people who understand”.

Fundraising
We are very grateful to be well supported by our local community who
fundraise and support us, meaning we can offer a wider variety of activities
to our young carers. We are always keen to hear from people who want to get
involved in our fundraising efforts and have events throughout the year, such
as charity walks, that people can get involved with. Many supporters also
host their own events for us!
Raising awareness of carers in North Somerset
Most carers don’t label themselves ‘carers’ – they’re husbands, wives,
sons, daughters or friends that do what they can to help someone who’s
struggling. Identifying young carers is one of our biggest challenges – so
anything we can do in our community to raise awareness can make a big
difference and everyone in our community can help with this. Schools play a
key part in this and can sign up to be part of our Young Carer Schools
Network, where we can work together to provide the best support for young
carers in school.
