Devon Rape Crisis and Sexual Abuse Services

"Confidential, professional support to survivors of rape, sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse."

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

We offer confidential, professional support to survivors of rape, sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse in Devon. We do this through our telephone helpline, email support service, and direct support work. We believe no one should have to cope with the impacts of sexual violence alone.

It doesn’t matter if the abuse took place yesterday or twenty years ago, we are here to help. We are excellent listeners and we will always believe you. We provide specialist support online, in person, and by phone, at a pace that you are comfortable with. Alongside this, we can also give unbiased information on what your options and rights are, and can help you make an informed decision about your next steps.

We really understand how difficult it can be to seek support, but getting in touch is the first step to coping with, and recovering from what has happened to you.

Our service is available to people living in Devon and Torbay (not Plymouth), aged 13 and upwards, irrespective of gender identity or sex, who have experienced any form of sexual violence.

We also offer limited support to families, friends and partners of survivors through our helpline and email support service.

What We Do

Telephone Helpline

Our telephone helpline is currently open on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays between 6pm-9pm. The helpline is anonymous and confidential, and we will not ask for any personal details. Our helpline is answered by our specially trained, female volunteer team. They are there to listen and support you, without judgement.

We know it can be very hard to take the first step and call; we respect and understand this, and will never push you to talk about anything you do not want to.

Calls will be charged at your usual rate, but if you have insufficient funds to talk, we can call you back. This service is available to anyone living in Devon, aged 13 and above.

The number for our helpline is 01392 204174.

Email Support

Our email support service is anonymous; we have special software which removes your email address before we receive it. We do not know your name or your email address.

The email service is here to help you explore your thoughts, feelings and what options you might have. We can give you information about those options, but we will never tell you what you should do. We will support you to decide for yourself, what is right for you as an individual.

Your email will be answered within 7 days by one of our specially trained female volunteers. Your email will not be answered by the same woman each time, however if your email to us is not your first one, we will be able to see the whole "thread" of the conversation (which has been anonymised by our system) so even if you get a different volunteer responding, you will not have to go back to the beginning each time. This service is available to anyone living in Devon, aged 13 and above.

The address for our email support is [email protected]

Direct Support

Direct support sessions are regular, specialist therapeutic sessions held at either our bases in Exeter, Torbay and Barnstaple, or online or over the telephone.

Our model of support is very much survivor centred. You are the expert in your own life and you will make decisions about how you would like your sessions to go, with the help and guidance of the woman who will be supporting you.

You will never be pressured into talking about anything you don't want to and the sessions will always go at your pace.

All of our workers are very skilled in working with trauma and helping with specific symptoms such as flashbacks, panic attacks and nightmares.

We can also provide advocacy and practical support.

Volunteer

Volunteers are the beating heart of our organisation, they deliver our helpline and email support services, contribute to decision-making, support our activism, help our campaigning, promote our publicity and fundraise for us.

We are looking to grow our team of dedicated volunteers and are looking for women who represent our diverse community to join our team. No previous experience is needed, as training is provided, we just ask for passion and commitment!

If becoming a volunteer with our organisation is something you might be interested in, you can find out more information here: https://devonrapecrisis.org.uk/support-us/become-a-volunteer/

Fundraising

If you are thinking about raising money for us, we are incredibly grateful that you have chosen us. Our priority as a service always has to be the support of people who have experienced sexual violence, which is why we don't do heaps of fundraising ourselves.

We think it is useful to both provide you with some information you can use in your fundraising and also share with you some of the things we've learned over the years. Please follow the link below to find out more information about fundraising for our organisation:

Training

Alongside our volunteer training, we are pleased to offer specialist training to a wide range of professionals, statutory and voluntary sector workers as well as counsellors, therapists and front line practitioners.

All of the training is informed by our good working practice and many years’ experience providing specialist sexual violence services.

All of our trainers are professionally qualified and use a variety of training methods including small and large group activities and case study work. We are fully inclusive and actively encourage a safe training environment for questions and discussion.

Your feedback and evaluation is welcomed and used to shape our practice and future training events. Hand-outs and information plus other supporting material will be provided. For all training that is not accredited, a certificate of attendance will be issued to delegates for CPD purposes.
