Friends of Bramall Hall and Park

"We support museum staff in the Hall and maintain and extend the gardens in the Park."

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

The health benefits from exercise and just being in a green space are well known. Our gardening volunteers meet up to twice a week to help make the park a constantly lovely place to visit, and over the past three or four years we have extended the gardens by well over an acre, uncovering the Victorian Rock Garden in the process.

Meanwhile, the volunteers who have an interest in the long history of the Hall act as stewards when the Hall is open, and as our numbers increase we are becoming involved in cataloguing the amazing artefacts the Hall contains. As a result of recent research we will soon  publish a trio of books about facets of the Hall including the Jolly Sailor and our Ghosts!

We also raise funds to support the Hall and park. In 2016 we contributed almost £25k to recreate the Small Dining Room as it was at the end of Queen Victoria's reign.

What We Do

Having two arms to our organisation - inside the Hall and out in the Park and gardens - means we can appeal to a wide variety of people. The inside volunteers are trained to help visitors and are mentored by the Museum staff. This allows them to talk confidently with the public on a regular basis.

The gardening volunteers learn new skills and knowledge from the more experienced members, some of whom have professional qualifications. We also chat with the public, who are keen to ask questions and thank us for our efforts.

Volunteer

We welcome people with quite different interests: if you have knowledge of or interest in history you will love helping in the Hall; and if you are a more outdoors person, whether you are an experienced gardener or simply wanting to give a hand you can enjoy the lovely surroundings of the park.
