Okehampton Men in Sheds

"We are a welcoming social group for men. We repair/recyle & make items including lots of tea!"

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

This volunteer led group of 'Shedders' has grown rapidly since it was set up in 2016. The aim is to address loneliness and isolation amongst men - supporting their mental health and providing a welcoming social space with worthwhile projects, such as repairs and remaking items. These projects then support our wider Okehampton community! A great win-win for everyone!

'Shedders' join us for many reasons, some have felt isolated due to poor health or bereavement, equally many just want to be part of a meaningful social activity due to retirement or unemployment. Others come  to learn/share a skill - or simply just for a cuppa and a chat! All are warmly welcomed - whatever age or ability!

We undertake a wide range of work for the community, supporting numerous other charities, schools, and community groups with requests for items to be made or repaired. A quick ‘snap shot’ of some of our other work includes:  a day free community fun day  (sponsored by Great Western Railway); working with the local ‘Who let the dads’ out group fostering inter-generational friendships and developing woodwork skills; and supporting the Gilead Foundation by building planters and compost bins. Other examples include picking apples from a tree in our local medical centre, sorting and distributing to our local food bank. We also send repaired tools and sewing machines to a sustainable development charity in Uganda (www.amigos.org.uk).

We are always keen to welcome new members - and grateful for donations too - please get in touch.

What We Do

We are here for all the community!  In a safe, social space, we work together to repair, recycle & make items, with plenty of tea breaks too! We love to welcome visitors who pop in for a cuppa, donating to us old tools, wood and items which would otherwise go to landfill. We repair these items to sell for our funds, or to give away to other local charities.  We also regularly support other local charities and schools to repair/make equipment for their cause, such a bird boxes, garden planters, and tool repair etc.

This is a truly exceptional project, its rapid growth in a short space of time shows how much it is needed and valued not just by the service users but also by the wider community.  A comment from a local resident who donated some items to us recently commented “such a welcoming place, the affection for the project and the goodwill amongst the Men for each other, is evident from the moment you walk in”.  Come along and see for yoursefl!

Volunteer

We are always keen to welcome new 'Shedders' you  absolutely do not need any particular skills -  those with woodworking and technical skills are welcomed - and they help share those skills with the other Shedders.  But......the single most important thing is we all help each other  - everyone can contribute whatever they enjoy doing -  even it it is just to come and socialise - sit and chat. All bring to us life skills which we can  work together, as a team, on our numerous projects.

We have many links locally and we know are  projects making a real difference to our local community. Come and join us - enjoy some laughs, plenty of cuppas and cakes - and very warm welcome awaits you!

Additional Info

We are keen to support many more in our community, and to this end we raised funds for the purchase of a wheelchair accessible minibus in 2024, with support of a major grant from the Clothworkers' Foundation . This vital piece of equipment is at the core of our future plans. We operate in a very rural area, and many who live in outlying villages can not get transport. Often these are amongst the most isolated people in our community and our minibus enables us to provide transport to the Shed - and also to collect old furniture, donations etc for us to upcycle and repair.

Running and repairing the bus is a considerable expense each year  - and many of our events help us to raise vital funds to keep the minibus going! We are always so grateful for donations to keep us on the road!
