Affa Sair - Self Help Chronic Pain Charity

"To provide help and share experiences for chronic pain sufferers."

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

Affa Sair (Scots for “Awfully Sore”), is based in the North East of Scotland and is open to chronic pain sufferers and their families/partners from anywhere in Scotland and beyond.  We started as a closed Facebook Group, formed by chronic pain sufferer Chris Bridgeford from Forres in Moray in 2015, in an attempt to break the isolation of chronic pain sufferers in the north east of Scotland.

In 2019 the charity - Affa Sair (SCIO) SC049728 was established, specifically to assist in the furtherance of knowledge about chronic pain conditions and to provide a strong presence for chronic pain sufferers and to educate the public, politicians, media, organisations and NHS Staff on the plight and needs of chronic pain sufferers.

Affa Sair is a wholly independent charity working purely for the benefit of chronic pain sufferers.  We very much see the need to work realistically and constructively with the Scottish Government and its advisors to gain the best for all chronic pain sufferers.  We feel strongly that any interaction with the Scottish Government should be a two-way street of listening and education where shaping the future and improving the lives of chronic pain sufferers is of the highest importance.

What We Do

Most of our support work is done on-line in a members-only Facebook Group and other virtual meetings, as chronic pain sufferers have immense difficulty getting out and about.  Members discuss their condition without reproach and pick up hints and tips from other sufferers together with articles and documents researched by the group.  There is also a website at  www.affasair.org where the charity provides advocacy and further support using shared research, facts and personal accounts. We also have X and Instagram feeds.

We are running a self-management social prescribing scheme from September 2023 to September 2024 together with Maryhill Medical Practice in Elgin, and Culbin and Varis Practices in Forres.  The scheme is the first chronic pain-specific social prescribing scheme in Scotland.  We are working with the quality improvement and assurance team (QIAT) at NHS Grampian to run a service evaluation so they can objectively assess how impactful social prescribing is in chronic pain patients.

Each practice will refer 50 patients to the scheme which will give patients the opportunity to take part in socially proscribed projects designed to help the patient with the difficulties of living with chronic pain.  This scheme will provide access to hydrotherapy sessions, art therapy, guided exercise classes, allotment access, book clubs, walking groups, guided meditations and other social events free-of-charge.

Volunteer

We are always interested to hear from people who live with chronic pain or are carers of someone living with chronic pain.  As we cover a large area of Scotland now it would be most helpful for people with IT and social media skills to voluntarily help us carry out events and services in areas outwith Moray.
