Woodbury Wide Awake

"Encouraging the conservation of the natural environment"

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

Woodbury Wide Awake was founded in 2019 as a festival of environment-focused projects and events throughout the parish of Woodbury, East Devon.  It was inspired by Reverend William Keble Martin, the renowned botanist, and illustrator and author of The Concise British Flora (1965), who died in Woodbury 50 years previously in 1969.  The festival explored his life, work and legacy, and also changes in the local and national natural environment that have occurred since that time, and environmental challenges for the future.   These themes were explored in a short community documentary film.

We concentrate on monitoring, protecting and enhancing the local natural environment of the parish for biodiversity, organising events and surveying and recording data on wildflowers and trees. Volunteers are very welcome!

What We Do

We concentrate on monitoring, protecting and enhancing the local natural environment of the parish for biodiversity, organising events and surveying and recording data on wildflowers and trees. Volunteers are very welcome!

Wildflowers

Surveys conducted in 2009, 2019 and 2024. A bi-monthly survey of 4 separate road verges around the Woodbury parish. Volunteers are welcome to help survey, record and collate data for submission to the Devon Biodiversity Records Centre.

Hedgerow Trees

Survey conducted in 2014 and 2024 monitoring the presence of hedgerow trees in the parish.

Ash trees

Repeat of a survey conducted in 2005-2009 to monitor the impact of Ash Dieback in Woodbury parish. This survey will take place in summer when the health of the crown of the tree is more apparent. Volunteers welcome.
