Scropton Riding for the Disabled
"Activities with horses to support the health & wellbeing of local people with additional needs"
Horses are amazing animals and through them we have opportunities to make real and lasting differences to the lives of local children & adults with additional needs. Our horses and activities offer opportunities to develop a wide variety of life skills, improve health & well-being, build abilities and all whilst having fun. We help an enormous range of disabilities; physical, learning, sensory, multiple and profound, and are extending our reach to those with mental health problems as well.
Activities include riding, horse care and horse agility allowing us us to work with a wide range of disabilities and needs.
Our activities enable our participants to:
• Develop a variety of life skills including self-esteem, self-awareness, empathy, relaxation, empowerment, focus and concentration. Being with horses can have a considerable impact on mental health and well-being.
• Benefit from physical exercise, helping develop strength, coordination and motor skills.
• Develop communication, teamworking, turn-taking and a variety of other social skills. Taking part in activities alongside staff, volunteers and other participants provides unique ways to progress these people related skills
• Learn horse related skills, giving individuals opportunities to develop riding as a sport and to work alongside horses
We offer a variety of activities with horses to suit different needs and abilities. Activities are run in small groups with a maximum of 6 participants, although a small number of 1:1 sessions are also available.
Most participants take part in activities on a weekly or fortnightly basis but you can also book for a one-off session and we regularly offer taster sessions to come and try our activities.
Riding
Riding involves working in a cooperative partnership with a horse. Participants can benefit from the help of leaders and sidewalkers to help them, or can develop independent riding skills
Agility
Horse Agility involves working as partners with a horse on the move, developing handling and negotiating obstacles.
Care
Horse care sessions involve learning how to care for and understand horses and their needs
Volunteering at our centre is rewarding and fun. There are a wide variety of roles you can get involved in, including:
Whether you can volunteer regularly or give us a few hours of your time occasionally, theres a space for you in our Team.
We take younger volunteers from the age of 12, and adult volunteers with no upper age limit!
There are also opportunities for volunteers with additional special needs.
Whatever your abilities and interests, our centre could be just the place to put them to good use.
