River Holme Connections
"Our mission is to transform the River Holme catchment for the benefit of people and wildlife."
From its source on the moorlands above Holmfirth, the River Holme and its tributaries flow north, meandering through beautiful landscapes including Holmfirth, Meltham, Honley, Armitage Bridge and Lockwood before joining the River Colne, at Aspley near Huddersfield town centre.
Rich in history and heritage, and teeming with wildlife, the River Holme provides wellbeing opportunities for young and old. It can be a place for leisure and recreation, or somewhere to relax and connect with nature, but it needs looking after.
River Holme Connections has been working in the Holme Valley for the last decade with the aims of improving the river catchment for both people and wildlife.
We have a small staff team based in Honley, supported by an essential group of wonderful volunteers. Without volunteers, our work wouldn’t have the impact it does. We hold volunteer work parties at various locations around the Holme Valley:
- 3rd Saturday of every month 10am – 12pm
- Most Thursdays 10am – 12pm
- Additional sessions throughout the week as and when needed.
Our volunteer sessions are for anyone who wants to spend time outside, connect with nature and the community! We don’t expect any ongoing commitment, just come along when you can. No experience is necessary – you’ll need to come appropriately dressed for the weather, but we provide all the instruction and equipment needed.
Volunteering is a great way to connect with others and the wider community. Our volunteering sessions also provide opportunities for you to connect with nature - to do your bit to boost biodiversity and mitigate climate change.
Our tasks are seasonal but include activities such as:
- Removing invasive species – pulling Himalayan Balsam
- Little picking
- Cutting back vegetation from paths
- Planting hedgerows and woodlands
- Monitoring water quality
- Wildlife surveys
- Attending community engagement events
- Running educational workshops with the community and schools.
We hope that by volunteering with us, it will boost both your mental and physical wellbeing by being outside, making a difference to our local environment and meeting new people.
You can help us by signing up to our volunteer mailing list and newsletter. When you read about a volunteer task on a day and time that you’re free and that appeals to you, simply send us an email to let us know you’d like to join and we’ll see you there!
No regular commitment is required, just as and when you can make it.
At these volunteer sessions you will help us improve the natural environment for both people and wildlife by clearing litter, monitoring water quality, clearing footpaths, planting trees, maintaining hedgerows and engaging others in our work at schools and community events.
