Coram Beanstalk
"We ensure all children get the wider support they need to switch on to reading"
Coram Beanstalk started in 1973 when a group of determined and passionate women noticed children in London primary schools desperately needed more reading support.
The education board in London agreed to let them bring in volunteers to read to children at two schools, to help with the problem. The idea was a success. But it turned out that this problem wasn’t just in London, and by the early eighties, the programme was starting to be rolled out to primary schools across the country. And since then we’ve helped more than 250,000 children.
The beanstalk has now branched out, and we’re proud to say we now also offer programmes to young people at secondary school and early years children. This helps us to reach a wider age range, in a way that works for them.
Now Coram Beanstalk supports more than 7000 children with their reading at more than 500 schools, thanks to the support of their 1291 incredible volunteers.
We believe every child deserves the magic of books – and the opportunity of a bright future - because life changes when you choose reading.
We support primary school children to discover the joy of reading.
We train and provide meaningful volunteer opportunities for anyone who can dedicate a consistent afternoon or two each week throughout the school year.
You can find out lots more about how we help on our website.
Here are a few short films about our volunteers and who we help
We simply could not continue working towards our mission without the support of our volunteers. Since 1973 we've been fortunate to engage with thousands of people who have generously donated their time, adding up to over 12 million hours of one-to-one reading.
We train and support community volunteers, young people and caregivers to give children something powerful:
Every week, our volunteers sit with the same children, building relationships that go far beyond the pages of a book. They follow the child’s pace, share laughter, listen deeply, and create a space where children choose reading and build essential skills for a brighter future.
Our community volunteers are often, but not always, early retirees – active, interested, and ready to give back. They find purpose and community in helping children grow in confidence and ability. And they’re never doing it alone – with expert training, ongoing support, and a strong community behind them, they feel equipped and valued from day one.
If you can't commit to the weekly, longer term, commitment our reading helper role needs, you may know someone who can, or can support us in other ways to help our work. If you are still in secondary school, take a look at our Reading Leaders programme and show your teacher!
