Sunderland LGBT NETWORK
"we offers a variety of services support groups, training courses, hate crime reporting,"
Sunderland LGBT+ Network supports a wide and diverse community across the city, focusing on improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other LGBTQ+ individuals. We are here for people aged 18 plus, Of all backgrounds, and experiences, whether they are exploring their identity, seeking support, or looking to connect with others.
We work closely with people who may need a safe and welcoming space to express themselves, as well as facing challenges such as isolation, discrimination, or mental health difficulties. Our services are also open to families, friends, and allies who want to better understand and support their loved ones.
In addition, we assist individuals who have experienced hate crime or discrimination, providing guidance, advocacy, and pathways to report incidents safely. We also support those who may feel marginalised within the LGBTQ+ community itself, ensuring that everyone—including trans and non-binary people, people of colour, disabled individuals, and those from faith communities—feels included and represented.
Through our work, we aim to reach anyone in Sunderland who could benefit from greater acceptance, understanding, and connection, helping to build a safer and more inclusive city for all.
Sunderland LGBT+ Network is here to make sure no one has to face challenges alone. If someone comes to us looking for help, we start by listening. Everyone’s situation is different, so we take the time to understand what they need and what kind of support would work best for them.
We offer a safe, welcoming, and confidential space where people can talk openly without fear of judgement. This might be through peer groups, or informal conversations at our events. Whether someone is struggling with their identity, feeling isolated, dealing with discrimination, or simply looking to connect with others, we are here to support them at their own pace.
If someone needs more specific help, we can guide them towards the right services. This could include support around mental health, accessing healthcare, housing, or legal advice. We also provide information and resources so people can make informed decisions about their wellbeing.
For those who have experienced hate crime or discrimination, we offer a supportive and understanding response. We can help individuals report incidents, explain their options, and stand alongside them throughout the process if they choose to take it further.
We also run regular events, support groups, and training sessions, giving people opportunities to build confidence, learn new skills, and feel part of a community. For many, simply knowing there is a space where they are accepted and understood can make a huge difference.
Above all, our service is about empowerment—helping people feel heard, supported, and able to move forward in a way that works for them.
There are many meaningful ways people can support Sunderland LGBT+ Network, and volunteering is at the heart of everything we do. We welcome anyone who is passionate about equality, inclusion, and supporting the LGBTQ+ community—whether they have lots of experience or are just getting started.
Volunteers can get involved in a variety of ways depending on their interests and availability. Many help us deliver our events and support groups by welcoming attendees, creating a friendly atmosphere, and ensuring everyone feels safe and included. Others support behind the scenes, helping with planning, organising activities, or setting up and packing down events.
For those who enjoy working directly with people, there are opportunities to assist with peer support, helping individuals feel heard and connected. Full training is provided, so volunteers feel confident and supported in these roles.
Some volunteers choose to help with awareness and outreach—spreading the word about our work, engaging with the community, and promoting equality across Sunderland. Others contribute their skills in areas like social media, administration, fundraising, or delivering training sessions.
We also value volunteers who want to help tackle hate crime and discrimination, whether by supporting reporting services, raising awareness, or helping us build safer spaces for everyone.
Volunteering with us is not just about giving time—it’s about being part of a community, gaining new skills, building confidence, and making a real difference in people’s lives. Whatever someone can offer, we aim to match them with a role where they feel valued, supported, and able to contribute in a way that works for them.
