Outside Edge Theatre Company
"OETC is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to addiction recovery through theatre and drama"
Outside Edge Theatre Company (OETC) is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to addiction recovery through theatre and drama. We’ve been around since 1999, creating hard-hitting award-winning shows and running creative activities for people affected by addiction.
Drama saved Phil Fox’s life. The late writer, actor and director saw the part it played in his recovery and wanted to share this life-changing power with others. So in 1999, he did just that.
His legacy is Outside Edge Theatre Company, a peer-led theatre company and participatory arts charity that uses creativity as holistic support for addiction recovery. We provide the building blocks for this journey with specialist support, creative activities, social events, job opportunities, and volunteering. And along the way we perform in some of the most exciting venues across the country, find friends for life and share hope for the future.
WHY WE DO IT
Drama and theatre aren’t just chances to unleash creativity. They dig deeper. People facing addiction can find themselves right at the edge of a precipice. Active participation in creative activities encourages people to take a step in a different direction and carve out a new narrative—to learn coping strategies, nurture healthier relationships, improve physical and mental health, and join a welcoming community. All while having fun.

Our schedule is full of creative activities that help build confidence, improve wellbeing and leave people feeling seen and heard. Feel the thrill of improv with our Drop-in Drama sessions or unleash a new talent with our scriptwriting workshops Write Now. Once you join, there’s so much more. Free theatre tickets, social events, Masterclasses with industry leaders and nurturing support from fellow peers and our dedicated team all play their part.
If you’ve never attended a session with us before, you can simply show up and join in. Register your interest and we will be in touch. https://outsideedge.org/register/
At the moment, we run in-person drama and creative writing sessions across London, alongside some online sessions – find out exactly where here. But drop us a line if you want to chat about starting a creative activity somewhere else in the UK. https://outsideedge.org/schedule-of-activities/
Our activities are open to anyone affected by any form of addiction. Including family members, carers and champions of those affected by addiction. Out activities are also open to people who are at-risk of addiction due to circumstances such as mental ill health, being vulnerable housed or anything else that might put you at risk of harmful behaviours. The only requirement for attending OETC session is that you are abstinent on the day that you take part.
Want to make a positive impact? We’re always looking for dedicated volunteers to support our work. Whether you’re helping out at social events or assisting workshops, there’s a place for you in our community. https://outsideedge.org/contact-us/
Those participating in our intermediate and advanced groups can receive training to become Peer Volunteers which offers exciting opportunities to act as a representative for OETC. Engaging as a Peer Volunteer can then lead to paid employment opportunities.
We don’t have any productions on at the moment, but sign up to the newsletter to hear about upcoming shows.
For more than a quarter of a century, our productions have explored stories of addiction and recovery. Discover our journey and the powerful performances along the way.
