Trusted Talk
"To give people a confidential, human space to talk openly, feel understood, and get support."
I spent twenty-five years in the public sector, a lot of it in senior management roles. I was good at the job. What I wasn't prepared for was how much of it turned out to be about people quietly falling apart.
You start to recognise it. The person who's suddenly late three mornings running. The one whose work is still immaculate but who's stopped saying anything in meetings. The colleague who asks how you are, means it, and then goes back to their desk and gets through another day on fumes.
And every single time, I'd ask the same question: who do I send them to?
The honest answer was usually nobody. Occupational health was for when things had already broken. Counselling had a waiting list and a threshold they hadn't crossed. The employee assistance number was a card in a drawer nobody rings. There was plenty of support for people in crisis and almost nothing at all for people who were simply carrying too much and hadn't put it down in years.
So they kept going. They coped. They were, in the language we all use, fine.
I couldn't stop thinking about that gap. Because overwhelm doesn't stay where it starts. It becomes sickness absence, and resignations, and marriages under strain, and — sometimes — the crisis everyone swears came out of nowhere.
Trusted Talk exists because of a very simple realisation: almost none of those people needed a clinician. They needed thirty minutes with someone who wasn't their manager, wasn't their partner, and wanted nothing from them. Someone whose entire job was to listen properly.
That's it. That's the whole idea. It sounds too small to matter, and it is the thing I saw missing for twenty-five years.
I still work full-time in the public sector. I run Trusted Talk unpaid, in the evenings, because I've seen what happens when nobody asks — and I've now seen what happens when somebody does.
Everyone deserves to be heard. I got tired of waiting for someone else to build it.
We give people thirty minutes, one trusted person, and no need to perform.
There's no assessment, no diagnosis, no waiting list, and nothing to fill in first. You don't need a referral or a reason that sounds serious enough. You call, you talk, someone actually listens — that's the whole mechanism, and it works precisely because there's nothing else to it.
It's a paid service, kept deliberately accessible, with an introductory conversation so people can try it before committing to anything ongoing.
Each session follows a light structure, not a script: how you're doing, what's weighing on you, what — if anything — might help. Some people talk about work. Some talk about a relationship, or a bereavement, or nothing they can quite name, just the accumulated weight of everything at once. The listener's job isn't to solve it. It's to hold it with you for half an hour, properly.
What makes that safe as well as warm is what sits behind it. Every listener is enhanced-DBS checked, fully insured and safeguarding trained. We work to a clear safeguarding framework, keep proper records, and know precisely when and where to signpost someone on if they need more than we can give.
Sessions can be one-off or ongoing, in person or by phone, entirely at the pace the person needs. Some people come once and feel able to carry on. Others come weekly for a while. There's no fixed course, because overwhelm doesn't arrive on a schedule and it shouldn't have to leave on one either.
It is deliberately human, and deliberately rigorous. Both matter.
We're a Community Interest Company run by directors who take no salary. Right now, we need people more than we need money — though we won't say no to that either.
Marketing and website support. We need someone with marketing or web experience to help us look and sound as credible as the work actually is — this could be a one-off project (refreshing the website, sharpening our messaging, helping us reach the right partners) or something more ongoing if you enjoy it. Whatever time you can give, from wherever you are.
Listening volunteers. We're looking for people to take calls and hold conversations with the people we support — a longer-term commitment, but one you can do entirely from home. You'll be fully trained before you take a single call. We arrange and cover your enhanced DBS check, and you'll complete safeguarding training so you know exactly what to do and who to go to if something raises a concern.
We also don't just hand you a caseload and disappear. We check in with you regularly, because listening to people who are struggling can be a lot to carry, and we take looking after our volunteers as seriously as we take looking after the people who call us.
If either of those sounds like you — an afternoon of marketing help or a standing commitment to listen — we'd like to hear from you.
On accessibility
You don't need to be anywhere in particular. Call from your car in a supermarket car park, from the bathroom during a break at work, from bed at 9pm when everyone else is asleep. There's no clinic to get to, no appointment to build your day around. Wherever you are when it gets too much, that's where we meet you.
On no waiting lists
There is no list. No six-week wait, no "someone will be in touch," no gap between deciding you need to talk and actually talking. You call, and someone answers. In a system where almost everything makes you wait until you're worse, that immediacy is the point, not a nice extra.
On being non-judgemental
Nobody is assessed, categorised, or told what they should be feeling. There's no wrong way to need this and no problem too small to bring. Whatever you say, however messy or ordinary it sounds out loud, you won't be met with a raised eyebrow or a "well, at least..." — just someone whose entire job, for thirty minutes, is to be on your side.
