The ethos of Black History Month is to educate people on the achievements and contributions African and Caribbean heritage peoples have made to the UK’s history and culture.
Black History Month UK was the brainchild of Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, a special projects officer at the Greater London Council. He wanted to boost the self-esteem of Black British children and young adults by educating on them on the achievements of Black people living in the UK.
The month has since evolved into a celebration of black history and culture that spans across multiple countries!
The theme for the month is ‘Legacies with Action: Understanding 60 Years of Change and Challenge.’ 2025 marks 60 years since the UK’s first Race Relations Act — a landmark moment in the ongoing journey towards racial justice and equality.
