InterAct Stroke Support

"Reading to stroke survivors as part of invaluable post-stroke support."

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

Every year in the UK 100,000 suffer a stroke, roughly equivalent to one person every 5 minutes. In the last year our 160 readers carried out 6,784 one-to-one readings in our 18 hospitals,  134 group reading sessions (serving hundreds of stroke survivors in our 50 stroke clubs) and 267 sessions daily sessions at Pembridge Hospice.

InterAct Stroke Support is a charity dedicated to supporting stroke recovery by using professional actors to deliver a stimulating and rich variety of reading material specially selected to suit the needs of stroke patients. Following a stroke (also referred to as a 'brain attack') reading and conversational interaction stimulates the brain, boosts memory and communication skills, improves mood and alleviates depression. We started as InterAct Reading Service in the year 2000 and were the brainchild of theatre director, Caroline Smith, who had been nursing her brother through a terminal illness. InterAct understands that stroke is a life-changing event and that recovery is a lifelong process.  The charity has grown and thrived. The recognition and support from stroke survivors, their families and friends, therapists, medical specialists and their staff is key to InterAct's continued success.

What We Do

We now read in 18 hospitals and over 50 stroke clubs across the country, as well as delivering ongoing community projects. We are currently holding conversations with the aim of establishing InterAct's reading service in Wales.

Sounds Library

Active Voices was an exciting project that InterAct created in conjunction with stroke clubs.  The idea was to get the creative juices of stroke survivors going, empowering them to create their own audio project.  Some chose to act, others to reminisce, but the key point is that it was determined by them.  People found confidence via creativity and we are committed to developing further community based artistic projects in the future.  If this is something of interest to you, please contact us. A cross section of some of the orginai work is here for you to listen too.
