Learning Disability Week

June 15 - June 21

This week is Learning Disability Week!  It is when we make sure the world hears what life is like if you have a learning disability.

The theme for this year’s Learning Disability Week is “Do you see me?”

People with a learning disability want to be seen, heard and valued.

That’s why we’re calling for a change to improve statistics like these:

  • Only 26.7% of adults with a learning disability are employed yet 86% of unemployed people with a learning disability want a paid job
  • 1 in 3 people with a learning disability spend less than 1 hour outside their home on a typical Saturday
  • Over 2,00 people with a learning disability and/ or autistic people are currently locked away in mental health hospitals.

This year Mencap want to show the world the incredible things that people with a learning disability can achieve, smashing misconceptions about what people can do and shining a light on the stigma many still face every day.

They want to show that people are so much more than a learning disability – and this is the week for everyone in our community to make some noise about their amazing achievements, tremendous talents, and issues that matter most.
